ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This handsome and rare 2LP box set from La Voix de son Maitre (2 C 065-01931/2, French pressing, large dog semi-circle label, stereo, booklet included) features conductor Otto Klemperer's visionary account of Mahler's Symphony No. 7 in E minor "Song of the Night", recorded with the New Philharmonia Orchestra in the rich acoustics of Kingsway Hall in September 1968.

Tracklisting:

I Adagio: 27:47

II Nachtmusik I (Allegro moderato) 22:08

III Scherzo (Schattenhaft) 10:28

IV Nachtmusik II (Andante amoroso) 15:42

V Rondo (Finale) 24:15

Although Klemperer's music-making was always stamped with his tremendous personality, his readings could seldom be labeled wayward or eccentric. However, his Mahler Seventh was a highly personal, and daring, conception. The New Philharmonia Orchestra followed him with tremendous concentration and the results are magnetic. As one of Mahler's foremost disciples, Klemperer brings a unique authority to this music – his Mahler Seventh remains a necessary supplement to any other version – the recording is outstanding.

Included is a full-size double fold-out booklet with notes by the eminent Mahler biographer Henry-Louis de la Grange, printed in French only.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the box is near-MINT. There is mild discoloration to the front panel, but that is all. Otherwise, the box appears almost as new. There are no seamsplits, corners breaks, owners' markings, bends, or other defects and the whole remains extremely solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, this is a truly fine collector's copy.

The condition of the booklet is EXCELLENT. It betrays a slight bit of handling and aging, but that is all – it is free of any marks or tears and remains bright and crisp.

The condition of the 2 LPs is EXCELLENT throughout. Though surfaces are not absolutely silent, really these are fine copies and playback is superb. Those requiring flawless or near-MINT copies are advised to look elsewhere. Overall, these are excellent collector's copies.
