Amongst musicians, more players believe Knappertsbusch to be amongst the very finest conductors, because more often than not he was able to achieve an utterly “fresh” sense of the music.

Fact is, Knappertsbusch disliked rehearsals. Instead, he relied on talking about the vision and feel of the music with the orchestra. Perhaps he would have everyone turn to a particular passage, have it played, then discuss the facets. The end result, in traversing the score in this manner, had audiences and musicians alike feeling as if the music before them had just be played for the first time, ever.

This is the maestro’s Bruckner, played with his favored Vienna Phil. It is the Blueback ffss box second edition, with one corner split; otherwise, very handsome and smart.
