Artist Overview: Korzus Korzus is a pioneering thrash metal band from São Paulo, Brazil, formed in 1983. They are widely regarded as one of the most important bands in the early Brazilian metal scene, alongside their more globally famous countrymen Sepultura and Sarcófago.
The band's career has been marked by a series of lineup changes, but a core of members, including vocalist Marcello Pompeu and bassist Dick Siebert, has provided a sense of continuity. Early in their career, Korzus's sound was raw and aggressive, influenced by bands like Slayer. Over the years, their style evolved to incorporate a more refined, Bay Area thrash-influenced sound, and later, a groovier, more modern metal style with hardcore elements.
Korzus has built a strong reputation in Brazil and has also gained international recognition through touring and releases on labels like AFM Records. They have a respectable discography of studio and live albums, and their influence on the Brazilian metal scene is undeniable.
Album Overview: Mass Illusion Released in 1991, Mass Illusion is the fourth official release and second studio album by Korzus. It is a pivotal album in the band's history, showcasing a shift from their earlier, more raw style to a more polished and professional thrash sound. The album's production, helmed by Roger Rocha Moreira, a notable figure in Brazilian rock, is clear and well-engineered, a significant step up from their previous work.
Mass Illusion finds Korzus crafting a sound that is both aggressive and accessible, with a strong focus on chugging, technical riffs and gang-shout choruses. The album has been noted for its similarities to Bay Area thrash acts like Anthrax and Exodus, while still retaining a unique Brazilian flair. Tracks like "Agony," "Blood for Blood," and the title track are prime examples of the album's straight-ahead thrash attack. The album also features a few curveballs, such as the acoustic guitar intro on the title track and the instrumental "Unpredictable Disease."
The album's success led to greater recognition for Korzus, including a music video for "Agony" that received airplay on Brazilian music television. Mass Illusion is a testament to Korzus's ability to evolve and adapt their sound, and it remains a highlight in their extensive discography.
