Viennese beatsmiths Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister prove themselves to be DJs with a difference on this stellar double-disc set. Instead of simply stringing together favorite tunes of the moment, K&D assemble something much more permanent and notable by gathering their own remixes for both well-known artists (Depeche Mode, Bone Thugs 'N Harmony, Roni Size, Bomb The Bass) and European cult acts (Rainer Trnby Trio, Count Basic, Knowtoryous, Sofa Surfers, Mama Oliver). The unifying thread can be called the K&D sound--a playfully off-beat and bass-heavy funk so singular that it instantly assimilates any piece of music into the K&D canon.
The K&D sound is a great equalizer, elevating all music to a common plateau of funked-up metagroove. Kruder & Dorfmeister see to it that vocal drum-and-bass, shady dub, frazzled big-beat, bouncy hip-hop, and down-tempo slink alike are pumped up with anabolic breakbeats, sizzling jazz breaks, and serpentine basslines. A landmark in downtempo head-nodding, Kruder & Dorfmeister’s album of remixes, THE K SESSIONS, achieved fame far beyond the usual DJ suspects. For a while, this was the definitive chill. To this day, it still holds up surprisingly strong, even though their style and vibe has been emulated to near extinction. On the first disc, right from the long, low throbs of Roni Size’s “Heroes” and Alex Reece’s stretched-out “Jazz Master,” you can tell why K are still the kings. From completely slow and dubby to Smith & Mighty style drum ‘n’ bass, they handle it all. The darkness of Rockers Hi-Fi’s “Going Under” is balanced by the out-and-out funk of Bomb the Bass’ “Bug Powder Dust.” And their take of “Rollin’ on Chrome” by the Aphrodelics is some of the best downtempo hip-hop I heard, ever. And, believe it or not, they make Depeche Mode’s “Useless” feel more hopeless than before. The second disc takes a much more chilled approach, with the dreamy tones of Mama Oliver’s “Eastwest” or Sin’s “Where Shall I Turn.” The harder inflections of Bone Thugs ‘N Harmony’s “1st of Tha Month” is transformed into a dub jazz smoker. Their second take on “Going Under” is moody and mysterious. Two original K compositions as well: the slow and meditative “Boogie Woogie” and the interlude “Lexicon.” Essentially, if this isn’t in your collection… there’s something wrong with you.
