"Detroit’s Big Mack Records had nonexistent distribution, little airplay, less promotion and no tours—hardly an M.O. for music-industry success. But just one listen to this compilation makes it clear that Big Mack could have joined Motown, Revilot and Golden World in the pantheon of great Detroit R&B labels of the ’60s. Leave it to the crate diggers at Numero to resurrect this quirky, long-forgotten label with 19 tracks that remind us it’s the music that counts most.
With no A&R department, Big Mack built its talent pool from walk-ins—aspiring singers willing to plunk down $14.95 to record their own one-offs. That method gave the label its masterpiece, Bob and Fred’s 1966 track “I’ll Be on My Way.” Bob Thomas and Fred Brown might have only wanted an acetate 45, but Big Mack owner Ed McCoy saw something special and added shimmering strings and an infectious, shuffling rhythm, creating a two-minute tour de force of Motor City soul. Bob and Fred? They never recorded again.
Big Mack went after a range of styles, recorded in a way that can best be described as trippy, intense and a bit out of control. This collection includes an instrumental, bari-sax-driven burner (“Bui Bui” by L. Hollis and the Mackadoos), a Little Richard--style rave-up (“You Drive Me Crazy” by the Grand Prix’s), some San Francisco psychedelia from Soul President and even a bit of seductive cooing by the marvelously named Ms. Tyree “Sugar” Jones. Eccentric? Absolutely—and just as essential.—Stuart Feil"
