Description
LARRY ADLER on WORLD PROGRAM SERVICE, 16-inch 33rpm vertical cut, for radio stations only. The harmonica master recorded 8 tracks for World Transcriptions in January and February 1944, with John Kirby's Orchestra, and they were issued on two 16-inch discs with other artists on the reverse sides. 7 of the tracks were later issued on Decca 78s, Decca owning World at this time.
Adler plays BEGIN THE BEGUINE, ST. LOUIS BLUES, AS TIME GOES BY, STAR DUST. "As Time Goes By" never appeared on 78 rpm.
Reverse side: CANEY--Latin American, vocals by Mano Lopez. RUMBA RHAPSODY (Theme), CAMARON Y MAMONCILLO, COMO SE BAILA EL SON, QUINGUA, TUMBANDO CANA.
Two copies are being offered. Different labels, different pressing periods. This copy generally VG, small scuffs and scratches (more on the Caney side).
Note: "vertical cut" is a type of recording used by radio broadcasting companies, the same as the old "hill and dale" of Edison and Pathe 78s. You need a specially wired cartridge or to be able to reverse the phase. You may also find that this disc plays better with a .7 mil stylus since this plays lower in the groove and gets past the worn areas. This technique doesn't work on 30s verticals but it seems to work nicely on Worlds from the 1940s.
