REVIEW: Nyro peaked early, and Eli and the Thirteenth Confession, just her second album, remains her best. It's not only because it contains the original versions of no less than three songs that were big hits for other artists: "Sweet Blindness" (covered by the 5th Dimension), "Stoned Soul Picnic" (also covered by the 5th Dimension), and "Eli's Comin'" (done by Three Dog Night). It's not even just because those three songs are so outstanding. It's because the album as a whole is so outstanding, with its invigorating blend of blue-eyed soul, New York pop, and early confessional singer/songwriting. Nyro sang of love, inscrutably enigmatic romantic daredevils, getting drunk, lonely women, and sensual desire with an infectious joie de vivre. The arrangements superbly complemented the material with lively brass, wailing counterpoint backup vocals, and Nyro's own ebullient piano.-Allmusic.com

MONO pressings of LPs are sometimes more than just STEREO LPs compressed into one channel. In many instances, different effects, different recording levels, alternate takes, or different arrangements/mixes were used, to produce a wholly unique sound. In an attempt to prop up the sagging sales on the MONO format, once STEREO LPs became the norm in the mid to late 1960s, record companies first dropped the price of the MONO versions, then began offering intentionally and surprisingly different MONO versions of some LPs. On some titles the difference can be striking, especially on an album the listener has heard many times before. Ultimately, the tactic failed and the MONO LP faded out of existence in the late 60s and early 70s. However, since they became quite scarce quite quickly, and also due to their sonic uniqueness, MONO LPs are highly collectible today.

The promotional versions of LPs are pressed FIRST, prior to commercial release. They are usually made DIRECTLY from the master tapes, resulting in SUPERIOR SOUND QUALITY. Common Stock copies are made from tapes sometimes several generations removed from the original masters. The promotional pressing can also be MIXED DIFFERENTLY to be better suited for in-store or on-air play. For these reasons, the promotional pressing is far more collectible than its common stock counterpart.

This particular LP shares the unique distinction of being BOTH and MONO and a PROMOTIONAL pressing. This was one of the very last MONO LPs ever to be released by Columbia. This makes the MONO version extremely hard to find. Go ahead and search Ebay for another copy....
