Description
Moses Asch presents LEAD BELLY accompanied by Sonny Terry playing 'Irene', 'How Long', 'John Henry', 'On A Monday', 'Ain't You Glad' & 'Good Morning Blues'.
This three 10 inch (6 Singles) 78 RPM disc set is NM and retains all of its' luster with the labels in near perfect shape.
These pieces were perhaps played and handled once or twice resulting in very slight, inaudible flaws to the surfaces. A Superior set that would be nearly impossible to upgrade.
The folder has some shelf rubbing, staining and edge wear but is solid in VG condition with no tears or chips and only a single crease to the rear upper corner.
This set is truely a collector's dream. Excerpt from Smithsonian Folkways (who now own the remaining Asch acetates) is as follows:
"Between 1941 and 1947 Lead Belly recorded some of his best music in Moses Asch's tiny New York studio. Asch envisioned himself as a documenter and didn't like to interfere with the music. He thought of himself as "the pen with which these artists write." Lead Belly had made a number of 78 rpm recordings for RCA Bluebird, Columbia, and Capitol, but none of them was commercially successful. Major record companies tried to sell him as a blues musician, but Lead Belly's large repertoire also included children's play party songs, blues, American folk songs, prison songs, accordion pieces, cowboy songs, and the pop songs of the day. This didn't mesh well with what the major recording labels of the 1940s thought a Southern black man with a guitar should sing and play. It was Asch who let Lead Belly record anything he wished, and Lead Belly kept coming back to Asch's studio when his flirtations with stardom failed."

I understand the importance of grading therefore I take extra time to list significant aspects of the disc and do not indiscriminately hand out NM grades to all my items. I have to visually inspect because I do not have a 3 mil needle to play test this disc properly but I will guarantee my description or your money back.
