Most fans think of classic Old-Time string bands as coming from either north Georgia or southwest Virginia, but one of the most successful (in terms of record sales) came from central Mississippi, a few miles northeast of Jackson. This was the Leake County Revelers, described in a Columbia catalog as "the finest interpreters of old waltz melodies in the Southland."
Best known for their original recording of "Wednesday Night Waltz" (one of the best-selling of all Old-Time records), the band had one of the most distinctive ensemble sounds in early Country music-a sound defined largely through the smooth, gliding fiddle style of Will Gilmer. The Revelers seldom played at breakneck speeds, but preferred waltzes and easy-going tempos that probably better reflected the rural string bands of an earlier age.
The band came together in 1926, when the four members got together after work around the town of Sebastopol. Apart from Gilmer, they were R.O. Mosley, Jim Wolverton and Dallas Jones. A Columbia talent scout in Jackson, H.C. Spier, heard them and got them an audition with Frank Walker, the A & R chief of Columbia. At the time, the quartet had no formal name, and it was Spier who came up with the name Leake County Revelers. In April, 1927, the four traveled to New Orleans, where they cut four sides for Columbia, including what would be their most famous song, Wednesday Night Waltz, in an arrangement that started as a waltz, but then broke into a double-time tempo at intervals.
