Label Conditions: Two super labels that are very attractive. Very slight and minor dull traces when scrutinised under angled light. But for certain, this record has hardly been played and this popular classic is so hard to find as such. Also this copy has the ultimate first A2 / B2 matrixes which are much harder to locate. There is one ultra fine and faint spindle trace on each side, again only really seen right up close under light

Weight of this Record: 137 grams. A very good solid weight for this one.

Rarity: Moderate: but the first issue A2 / B2 matrix copies in very fine condition are much harder to find. Some early copies included an Obi strip on the cover, these are very hard to find and this copy does not have it. But I always consider condition, and especially sound quality the most important factor bar none, and this record really delivers. I have found in most cases, only the very first issues offer that really top-end sound. Later ones often crackle and sometimes even have pressing issues, this hardly played example plays superbly with practically nothing unwanted and I am sure the earliest cuts have that extra small details and clarity the others lack. Also, this has a very fine cover too with little wear at all. Lastly, the first issues included the lyric inner sleeve with a textured finish, later ones were totally smooth. These often split and tatty, this one only gently aged but and fully intact. So overall, a strong very early copy that looks impressive and importantly, offers the sound the more discerning collector wants. These are at more of a premium and scarce.

Run-Out Groove Text: ‘STIRLING K1’ / ‘STERLING RL’.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Their brilliant fifth album and the first that never appeared on the famous Plum format in the UK. Often underrated, compared to the first four but unjustifiably so, how could any band follow classics of that stature indefintely? - answer, to do something a little different and Houses of the Holy works beautifully, only slightly blemished (in my opinion) by two lesser songs: ‘The Crunge’ which experimented with a funk sound and the reggae track ‘D’yer Mak’er’, which really does not work for me. The other six songs are pure classic Led Zeppelin at their very best. Chart topping in both the UK and US this album again proved a popular big-seller. Please note, I have carefully placed items to obscure the closer images but NOTHING unwanted is hidden in terms of wear, marks or blemishes. This is a quality original copy, no Obi (as per most), but if supreme sound, detail and utmost sonic delivery is wanted, this really packs a BIG punch.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated, matt finished gatefold that has no text printed on it whatsoever. This includes the textured inner sleeve which was printed and made in England by MacNeill.

Cover Front & Back: Both sides very similar being clean, fresh and attractive with little wear or marks at all. A small rub and minor crease on the top right front corner tip being the ‘biggest’ blemish on view. A faint rub trace on the back near the top from the record rim shows little and there is hardly any creasing at all. Both spine folds retain full ink cover and no sticker marks or issues. A fine natural print finishing gripper mark parallel on side side towards the top just seen, that totally within manufacture and quite normal. I state again, I have covered the more ‘visual’ part of this cover, but nothing is hidden in the way of unwanted wear or marks.

Cover Inner Gatefold: One of the greatest inner gatefold spreads you will ever with to see, I love this artwork and rarely have seen it look better. This looks gorgeous and is very richly coloured with much deeper colour that subsequent printings.

Top Edges: Any rub traces up to the very corner tips are very few, light and faint, both also very straight.

Bottom Edges: Even these ‘resting edges’ show minimal traces of wear, just a very small, fine surface rub on the front just right of centre.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any wear, any thickening or burring hardly registers. Record enters on the back edge, both guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with barely any compression or rubbing. Folded square, so the edges meet up very closely and parallel. No text was printed on this one and the design flows around with minimal traces of any wear.

Corners: Most of any tip rubbing is gentle and light, most on the top right front with a hint of a small crease. Very fine shape and better is retained.

Cover Summary: Never an easy cover, these early matt finished examples are prone to all forms of wear. So one with so little to fault should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: this being somewhat critical as this has hardly any real wear as such. Only marked down a little for some quite light age or tone spotting, this being light and faint and mainly to one side. This being the heavier card with the original textured finish, they were not lined. It has the original MacNeill Press English credits. The odd tiny corner tip crease but little else and generally still quite clean and attractive. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++) / EXCELLENT(+): a super first pressed A2 / B2 copy and without doubt hardly even played. A few very fine and faint surface trace hairlines seen critically under light on side two, these are very difficult to avoid on any album housed inside an unlined card style inner and many had them from removal on day one. This is very clean, with a lovely shine, intense black and very solidly pressed – heavier than most subsequent pressings. Evidence, including superb sound quality, suggests a copy hardly played. Visually an impressive ‘House of the Holy’ that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This genuine first issued record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly difficult album that sometimes can disappoint, even on the cleanest looking copies. This is one of the best UK pressed examples of this difficult album I have heard. Few copies will match or outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure and this was a joy from start to finish. A record (and cover) clearly well looked after and modestly handled, I doubt if this record has seen daylight for years. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record and most fans will treasure it. This copy will prove difficult to find better and is strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
