LED ZEPPELIN II
ATLANTIC SD 8236
1ST EDITION 1A ETCHED INTO SIDE 1 OF RUN OFF
STEREO 1969
ST-A-691671-1A RL
S-T-A-691672-D SS LH
MEGA RARE EXAMPLE WITH SIDE 1 MASTERED BY ROBERT LUDWIG RL IN RUN OFF
PLUS SIDE 2 MASTERED BY STERLING SOUND BOSS LEE HULKO SS LH IN RUN OFF
HERE'S THE STORY, WHEN THIS ALBUM WAS BEING MASTERED, THE BAND WANTED TO MAKE IT REALLY HOT AND LUDWIG WORKED IT TILL THE BASS AND HIGHS LITERALLY JUMPED OUT OF THE SPEAKERS WHEN PLAYED. THIS HOWEVER, CAUSED SOME INFERIOR TURNTABLES AT THE TIME TO MAKE THE RECORD SKIP, ONE OF THESE TURNTABLES BELONGED TO ATLANTIC RECORDS PRESIDENT AHMET ERTEGUN'S DAUGHTER. SO HE REQUESTED ALL FURTHER PRESSINGS TO BE EQ'D TO REMOVE THE EXCESSIVE BASS. THEREFORE, ONLY THE FIRST EDITIONS ARE LUDWIG'S
MEANWHILE THE OWNER OF STERLING SOUND, LEE HULKO, TOOK OVER MASTERING THE EARLY EDITIONS AND WORKED THE MASTERS SO THE BASS WAS STILL PREVALENT BUT DID NOT GO OVERBOARD.
ALL FUTURE PRESSINGS ARE MASTERED BY OTHERS AND DO NOT SOUND LIKE THIS ONE.
THIS IS A VERY RARE COPY WITH SIDE 1 (WHOLE LOTTA LOVE) MASTERED BY LUDWIG AND SIDE 2 BY LEE HULKO
NOW, LET'S DISCUSS THE CONDITION OF THIS RARE ONE. I AM RATING IT AS VG FOR THE PICKY BUYER. IT HAS THIN HAIR LINES BUT NO DEEP FELT SCRATCHES. YES, IT DOES HAVE THE OCCASIONAL CLICK AND POP, AFTER ALL IT HAS BEEN ENJOYED, IT SOUNDS SO GOOD HOW COULD IT NOT? AND LIKE A LOT OF ATLANTIC RECORDS OF THE PERIOD IT DOES PLAY WITH A SLIGHT WARP WAVE THAT DOES NOT IN ANY WAY CAUSE ANY DAMAGE. NOW THE GOOD PARTS. THIS RECORD SOUNDS AMAZING! IF YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD A LUDWIG MASTER, IT IS REALLY TRUE THAT NOTHING ELSE COMES CLOSE. IT IS LIKE BEING IN THE STUDIO WITH THE BAND. THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY TO LISTEN TO THIS RECORD AND THAT IS VERY LOUD!! FORGET A CD, THIS ANALOGUE BEAUTY IS UNBEATABLE. PLUS, IF YOU GIVE IT A GOOD CLEANING IT WILL NO DOUBT BE EVEN BETTER!!
IT IS PROBABLY NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND A COPY OF THIS RECORD IN EXCELLENT OR BETTER CONDITION, SO PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO OWN THIS ONE - IF YOU ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO WIN THE AUCTION AND DON'T LIKE IT, RETURN IT, NO PROBLEM!!
GATEFOLD SLEEVE IS VG PLUS . LOVELY ORIGINAL DARK BROWN THAT FEELS SOMEWHAT TEXTURED, VERY HEAVY US CARDBOARD.
HAS BUMPING ON CORNERS AND EDGES BUT NO SPLITS. HAS INITIALS ON FRONT AND AGE WEAR AND A HINT OF RING WEAR
HAS THE WIDER THAN AVERAGE SPINE THAT ADVERTISES ONLY LED ZEPPELIN AND NOT II ANYWHERE
NO ADDRESS ON COVER OUTSIDE
INSIDE IS FLAWLESS! WITH CORRECT BROADWAY ADDRESS
SPINE HAS BUMPING DAMAGE

How I Grade Condition Of Discs
Mint
This means I have owned it from new or purchased from a distributors warehouse, basically it means absolutely new shape, never been played or out of its dust cover. In the case of LP's, a North American album will have to be factory sealed (anyone can reseal an album!) Take Note: European and Japaneses albums were never shrink wrapped!
Note: Being mint does not guarantee it's free of pops and clicks, many pressings especially from the US were made with very poor vinyl and in a hurry which means often there are imperfections in the pressing. As a former importer, we were often given back brand new albums due to clicks heard in the playback.
Mint Minus - No such thing, it's either mint or not.
Excellent - A disc is super clean, with no visible marks
Excellent Plus, means it's probably mint but can't be proven by me.
Excellent minus, is a disc that is excellent except it may have some markings that do not show up in the playing
VG - A disc that is STILL in good shape, WILL have some scuffs or scratches, not in excellent shape but well worth owning. VG + and ++,a disc that is that much better than VG.
VG minus, just a smidgen below VG
Good - A disc that can be played, has obvious ware but is worth owning, a DJ copy of a rare early Motown for instance or a rare Doo-Wop or Northern Soul which could still be worth a fortune, Good Minus & Good Plus is a step above or below Good. In most cases I will not offer a disc in this condition unless it's rare and hard to find.
LABELS
Labels do not alter the grading of vinyl; many records are Excellent, looked after by the previous owner but still have their initials or markings on the label. A DJ copy will often have markings to show which side to be plugged, or the length of the intro. Many labels and covers in the US have been punched, that was done by the record company to show the disc was deleted and shipped out to mass retailers to sell cheap and could not be returned for a credit, this does not impede the value, many records eg Swan and VJ Beatles were done like that, also many promo lp’s were punched or slit to show they were provided as promotion and not charged to the client and no royalties paid to the artist
