Notes; PLEASE READ: MANY LISTINGS OF THIS ALBUM ARE LISTED AS A 1ST PRESS, AND THEY ARE NOT, AS MY NOTES WILL ANSWER. 

 There are three main versions of the Led Zeppelin IV album with a couple more with spelling mistakes.

Led Zeppelin’s 4th album is arguably their greatest, with seminal works including Black Dog, Rock And Roll, When The Levee Breaks and of course, Stairway To Heaven. Officially the album is untitled, but is widely known by various monikers, including Led Zeppelin IV or 4, Four Symbols. Whatever it’s known as, it’s high on any rare record collector’s list of desirable albums, as long as it’s on the Atlantic ‘red/plum’ label.

What is less well known though, is that the label design itself has been littered with mistakes and changes in its short lifespan.

Version 1: First Press A3 B3

1st issue: seemingly all ‘present and correct’ for the very 1st release.

Version 2: Also 1st Press (2nd label)

Jimmy Page (allegedly) was furious at the presence of an Executive Production credit to Peter Grant (he’d had a previous credit removed from Led Zeppelin III on later issues) and as a hasty correction, stickers were applied to remove this credit and also to correct the erroneous publishing credits from “Kinney Music Ltd” to “Kinney Music Ltd./Superhype Music Inc.”. To make room for this sticker (which obliterated the band’s name from the bottom half of the label), a second sticker “LED ZEPPELIN” was added to the top half of the label, beneath the four symbols.

Version 3: Second Press A3 B4 (3rd label)

With all of the stickered label corrections now correctly printed…they (designers, printers…who knows!) somehow now get the song title wrong for ‘MISTY MOUNTAIN HOP’…and turn it into ‘MISTY MOUNTAIN TOP’…! How many drugs were these guys taking?! Correctly printed labels with LED ZEPPELIN now in top half, correct publishing credits and no Peter Grant credit.

“Under licence from Atlantic Recording Corpn.,” is now within the central white stripe. ‘MISTY MOUNTAIN HOP’ is then correctly restored on the Side Two label (for now!). This is the last Led Zeppelin issue on red/plum.

 The next release/reissue of this album would be on the orange and green Atlantic label, but somehow those trippy designers or printers managed to reprint the ‘MISTY MOUNTAIN TOP’ label error again…! This was subsequently corrected again to ‘HOP’ on the next reissue…

Very early mother stampers.

VINYL:

 Thickly pressed quality vinyl, you only find with the early red/plum labels.

When you look at it in normal light you can see a few hairline marks, when you angle it to a strong light you can see light hairlines and paper scuffs, these on the whole do not affect the audio too much. It plays really well, it reaches all the notes high and low, I played it as loud as I could and there was very little distortion, the sound is fantastic all the way through, there is a slight amount of static and the odd click but nothing more than you would expect. There are NO skips, NO jumps or anything else intrusive, it’s clear and vibrant and rates at VERY GOOD+

 SLEEVE

This iconic sleeve is not bad for one of these as most are torn, squashed or defaced because these early covers are not laminated and they suffered badly as with Led Zep II.

It has been looked after and is very clean, this has general wear to the edges, corners & spine.

There is NO graffiti, NO unwanted writing, NO creases, NO tears, see photos

  GRADED; VERY GOOD

INNER SLEEVE

The original textured dark grey inner song sheet is unfortunately missing, so the vinyl is housed in a brand new poly lined sleeve.

LABELS

The labels are the sensational RED/PLUM Atlantic, with the ‘Led Zeppelin’ in the Top half and with the credits Kinney Music Ltd/Superhype Music Inc. The middle white stripe is very clean, NO finger marks or any other marks.  

Both sides are free from any graffiti, (Side two has a hairline mark), or any other marks. They have minimal spindle traces.

NOTES

This is a 2nd UK release with Red/Maroon label design, known as the deluxe.

Matrix numbers Run of wax has corrected matrix numbers on side one (1st press with A3 B4) with Pecko Duck & Porky also hand etched on Side One and Two respectively. It has very early mother stampers, indicating a very early press.

Records will be sent in a strong album mailer (DEFENDA MUSIC MAX) with bubble wrap, and with the record separate to the album sleeve, inside a plastic cover.

GRADING

All my records are graded using the

Record Collector Magazine's Grading Guide

MINT:
The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks
or deterioration in sound quality.
The cover and any extra items are in perfect condition.
Records advertised as sealed or un-played should be mint.

EXCELLENT:
The record shows some signs of having been played,
but there is very little lessening in sound quality.
The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

VERY GOOD:
The record has obviously been played many times,
but displays no major deterioration in sound quality,
despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch.
Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items,
without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD:
The record has been played so much
that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated,
perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches.
The cover and contents suffer from folding,
scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.

FAIR:
The record is still just playable but it has not been cared for properly 
and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. 
The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.
