Description
Led Zeppelin’s fourth (and some would say best) album, catalogue No. 2401012 on the Atlantic Red/Plum label. An EXCELLENT RARE EARLIEST FIRST PRESSING of this 1971 UK example. What signifies this as one of the earliest records off the press along with the EARLIEST MATRICES of A3 and B3, are THE LABELS. The more common LATER labels have no Peter Grant 'executive producer' credit, along with Page's producer credit on the purple half of the label below the 'Led Zeppelin' legend. On the LATER labels, Grant's credit has been removed completely and the 'Led Zeppelin' legend moved up into the red half of the label. ALSO ! The LATER labels have the legend 'Under License From Atlantic Recording Corp' written into the white band in the centre of the label. On this earliest copy, this is written into the red half of the label. They also have the characteristic paler, matt appearance unlike the later red/plum glossy labels. This copy also has the famous ‘Pecko Duck’ and ‘Porky’ etchings in the run off grooves on each side. As with all these early Atlantic pressings the power they got into those grooves is astonishing ! This record has a power and depth that just surges out of the speakers and (very pleasantly) kicks you in the aural senses !! Bonzo’s drums are always a revelation and here it feels like you’re right there with him when He’s pounding out ‘Four Sticks’ and ‘When The Levee Breaks’. The detail and clarity of the quieter passages in ‘Stairway To Heaven’,'Going To California' and ‘The Battle Of Evermore’, are nothing less than wonderful ! The vinyl has a mirror like sheen and only a few light marks resulting in a few light clicks here and there, but nothing major except for a visible scratch all the way across the first track on side two. This looks like it is going to be very audible throughout the track but amazingly, it is not! It is audible in a few places but for the most part is hardly noticeable. The audio reproduction is first class with NO DISTORTION. The sleeve is in good condition apart from a name written on the front top right. There is only a little wear on the edges and spine. The original inner sleeve is in overall good order apart from about a 3cm split down one side and 2 tears to the top edge. There is again a name written in the top corner. Overall, an excellent and VERY RARE EXAMPLE of an awesome record, by an awesome band captured at the height of their powers !!
