LED ZEPPELIN – IV ORIG Atlantic LP / 2401012 (UK, Stereo, 1971)
From my own collection, I’m happy to present this very early UK press of one of the greatest rock LPs of all time – Zeppelin’s incredible fourth, the album that firmly established them as probably the most popular band on the planet during 1972. This record has the following information in the run-off grooves:
Side 1: 2401012 (corrected) A // 3 1 1 2 3 (machine stamped) and ‘PECKO DUCK’ (inscribed)
Side 2: 2401012 B // 3 1 2 9 (machine stamped) and ‘PORKY’ (inscribed).
The non-laminated gatefold sleeve is a nice example, showing light but not drastic signs of age. Still totally structurally sound and with only 2 tiny creases to the front panel. NO splits, rips or writing. No real ring impression and a nice inner gate. There is moderate rubbing and wear to the edges and the spine and the opening edges are slightly softened. Add to this some medium level corner wear to the two spine corners and some lesser wear to the others and that’s about it for signs of age. GENERALLY A NICE, STRONG SLEEVE which lies flat and still maintains good colour. Comes in at a true VG+ (Very Good Plus) grade.
The plum/orange labels are very nice – ‘Led Zeppelin’ is printed to the top with the ‘Under licence from…’ text in the white band. NO writing, tears, stickers or residue and spindle evidence is only light, focused around the immediate centre hole. There are around a half-dozen dust spots on the Side 1 label but overall a pleasing set of these iconic labels.
The paper inner sleeve, unlike many for this title which have been switched, is guaranteed to be the original. It just shows light wear and signs of handling and has the catalogue number written on the lyric side in the top right corner. Please note too that the 3 edges have been reinforced with tape which has browned with age.
The light to medium weight vinyl is in a fantastic EX+ (Excellent Plus) condition! Lovely shine with virtually no marking. A couple of tiny hairlines to the start of Side 2 (nearly invisible) but NOT MUCH ELSE! NO scratches, scuffs, ugly scrapes! NO embedded dirt, dust pockets or dulling! A really pretty copy! IT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO and plays brilliantly! That means there are no drop-outs, hiss, snap, crackle or pops! Very rarely do you find a Zeppelin album looking and sounding as good. There is NO distortion or loss of clarity or lack of definition. A REALLY TOP PLAY. All I picked up was a single click at the beginning of ‘Stairway To Heaven’ and a touch of light dust static in the dead areas (not crackle!). The play grade at least matched the visual one! Everything is loud and clear. Tremendous.
Summary: A top-end record in a solid flat-lying attractive sleeve.

I do not use any more than ONE plus or minus between grades. After all, WHAT ON EARTH DOES VG+++++ MEAN? What is NM+? Or EX---? These are just some of the ridiculous gradings I’ve encountered on eBay. I am very careful using the EX (Excellent) grade. Excellent, by dictionary definition means‘extremely good’ NOT ‘marked and slightly beat up with wear’!
