• SEALED  - An unopened, never used, vintage record still housed in its original, intact shrinkwrap. A 100% brand-new record like you get at the record shop.

• Near Mint Minus (NM-)   A nearly perfect record. Many dealers won't give a grade higher than this implying (perhaps correctly) that no record is ever truly perfect even when new. A NM- record should show no obvious signs of wear other than very minor defects such as almost-invisible beginnings of ringwear or other signs of very slight handling.  NM- covers have no plainly visible creases, folds, seam splits or other noticeable jacket defects.  "Cut-out" LP jackets in close to perfect shape otherwise can still qualify for NM-.  Same holds for inserts, posters, lyric sleeves, etc. So an LP in Near Mint Minus (NM-) condition looks as if someone removed the shrinkwrap and played it carefully once or twice. NOTE: Near Mint Minus (NM-) is my top grade for all opened, perfectly beautiful records. 


• Very Good Plus (VG+)  A Very Good Plus (VG+) record will show signs that it was played and handled by a previous owner who took care of it. Vinyl surfaces may show some signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or light scratches that do not affect the listening experience. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are OK. Covers may have some visible ringwear, very small seam splits or mild ageing discoloration, but it should be minor and not hugely noticeable. The center LP hole and labels will not have been misshapen or marred by repeated play.  A VG+ LP cover may show minor signs of wear like slight creasing, minor storage wear marks or indentations. Picture sleeves and inner sleeves may have some slight wear, lightly turned up corners or a small seam split. In general, if not for minor issues, this would be Near Mint Minus. All but the most 'mint crazy' collectors should find a Very Good Plus (VG+) record quite acceptable in the collection.


• Very Good (VG)   Many of the defects found in a VG+ record become significantly more pronounced in a VG disc. Surface noise is plainly evident upon playing especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music. Groove wear will start to be noticeable and visible, as will light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail tip) and background pops and clicks will affect the sound. Labels may be marred by writing or have tape or stickers attached. Jackets may have the beginnings of significant ringwear, edge wear, or large seam splits. The same may be true of picture sleeves or inserts.

• Very Good Minus (VG-)  High amount of surface noise/groove wear with plainly visible, feelable marks on vinyl and loud clicks/pops audible throughout, but still listenable music on most parts of the LP on most turntables and audio systems. Covers/jackets may be largely split, heavily worn, significantly torn or otherwise heavily damaged.
