ONE OF the most eagerly awaited double live albums released during the seventies. It was actually a soundtrack, taken from the motion picture of the same name (with additional audio tracks) showcasing Led Zeppelin live on-stage at New York’s Madison Square Gardens.
The band, having completed a mammoth North American tour, were tired and stressed, looking to take a break from live work yet it remains a crucial and important ingredient to an appreciation of the Led Zeppelin phenomena. Big, bold and capacious, the band’s ambitions had few boundaries and with a live album and spectacular film such as this, it is possible to fully appreciate just how breathtaking their mercenary approach really was. Taking absolutely no prisoners the band simply demolish the stage, laying waste with a sonic barrage few have ever come close to, let alone fully emulate.
When it came to sheer over-the-top debauchery the twenty-seven minutes of ‘Dazed And Confused’ is possibly the band’s greatest triumph, closely followed, natch, by ‘Moby Dick’, John Bonham’s drum solo tour de force allowing him to beat his drum kit with bare fists - that’s skin on skin - with predictable neanderthal results.
Cohesive tracks include the shimmering ‘No Quarter’, propelled by eerie keyboards from John Paul Jones and phased guitar from Page, the title track nudging a close second for sheer musicality, ‘Rock n’ Roll’ and, to a lesser degree, ‘Celebration Day’ suffer just a tad from nervous exhaustion. The classic ‘Whole Lotta Love’ captures Page hard at work on his theremin - gangling arms extended to zap the antennae.
Of course, any Zeppelin live performance wouldn’t be complete without ‘Stairway To Heaven’ captured here in both judicious and magical form, with Plant excelling and Page delivering a profoundly longer and better solo than on the studio version.

This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.

Vinyl:Top shiny clean and shiny condition. One lone spindle mark but no other signs of use. Displays some miroscopic surface scuffs under a strong light due removal from the custom inner sleeves. Perfect sound reproduction. Grades as top almost archive MINT-!
Cover: Issued in a textured and embossed gate-fold cover with 8 page photo booklet stapled into the centre. There is absolutely no signs of handling or use whatsoever, totally clean and fresh - in fact it looks like it walked out of the factory yesterday. No ring wear, no rubbing, no dirty finger marks, no split seams, no dings, creases or bends. All edges are 100% square, sharp and unworn, the spine is perfect uncrushed and creaks on opening. This is the genuine 1st pressing, manufactured in the UK with the 484 Kings Road address. Beautiful museum quality and impossible to find like this 43 years after release. Grades as top MINT!
