Label Conditions: Four supreme examples: all ultra clean, fresh and attractive and hardly a spindle trace to be seen. This from a superb collection of barely played records, purchased from new by one owner and played very sparingly on a quality turntable. This one I was told had been played just once, that from the owner’s mouth and not guesswork.

Cat Number: SS 89402 (SS 2-201).

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 111 / 117 grams. Not heavy, but no mean untypical for this set. This is a German pressed example made for the UK market, that was the trend being followed at the 1970s progressed. These two records sound fantastic with quite possibly the cleanest sound I have yet heard from this album.

Rarity: Moderate: again another big-selling Led Zeppelin album. Conditions for me are the paramount factor, and this one looks and plays beautifully, never take this for granted.

Original Year of Release: 1976

Matrix Nos: R/S Alsdorf 89402 A2 XX; R/S Alsdorf 89402 B5 X; R/S Alsdorf 89402 C2; R/S Alsdorf 89402 D2 X [these deep punched Roman type and very pronounced], all have ‘STRAWBERRY’ on the run-out grooves.

Musicians: John Bonham – drums, percussion; John Paul Jones – bass guitar, keyboards, Mellotron; Jimmy Page – electric guitars, backing vocals; Robert Plant – vocals.

Brief Info: A live double album with tracks from the concert film of the same name. Recorded over three nights at New York’s Madison Square Garden during the 1973 North American tour. Issued to mixed reviews at the time, but most fans enjoyed it, and I am sure they will enjoy this superbly preserved and ultra clean pressed copy. Certainly one of the cleanest and best looking and sounding copies I have seen for many years, if not ever. Never one that wears well - the cover often worn and rubbed - the records heavily played and often not pressed well. This German-made example for the UK market is a class act.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt surfaces. Both front and back have embossing and fine texturing. The inner surfaces are smooth with a double stapled 8-page book fixed inside. Printed and made in Germany and including both the plain black inner sleeves. All text is in English and it has the wide spine format.

Cover Front: Very impressive indeed, and being a double gatefold set, this front is just as prone to ringwear as the back, but here, shows none. Very clean, fresh and attractive, any surface trace blemishes are tiny, few and faint as seen ultra critically under angled light. Minimal handling traces and barely a crease to be seen. This will prove hard to find better.

Cover Back: Practically the same again, any rim impression minuscule, this cover is so hard to fine like this.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Practically as new with the book rock solid with clean, crisp pages that have no creasing or tears. This has two original reinforcing staples seen in the centre of the booket, both untarnished and unloosened.

Top Edges: Both edges wide and unworn, very straight and the cover lies perfectly flat when closed with no bowing at all.

Bottom Edges: Same again on these more vulnerable storage edges, as this was cover-protected for most of it’s existence, even these have escaped wear.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both very clean, crisp and very sharp with barely any hint of wear whatsoever. These are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. Records entered on these right outside edges.

Spine and Text: Put simply – Immaculate. Solid, straight, uncompressed and folded square, all edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. All text is near perfect and unworn as can hopefully be seen on my close-up spine picture. Unusually, both the folds are totally unrubbed, crisp and unscuffed. This spine is also wide and is totally uncrushed and stands solidly erect with no tilt at all.

Corners: Any tip rubs are beyond tiny and all retain superb better than excellent to near mint shape. This heavy, thicker cover always seems to attractive dinks, but this has none at all.

Cover Summary: A very strong and visually impressive all-round example of this very wear-prone and revealing mid-70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This very attractive cover should please most-all collectors and really does go along way to reminding of when first purchased.

The Inner Sleeves: MINT(-): and both practically like new. The reason? - the original owner put two lined white inners inside to protect both records and inners themselves. These are fresh, uncreased with no edge splits or repairs, both look hardly even handled.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++) / MINT(-): a superb visual pair that are super clean, shiny, intense black and fairly solidly pressed. A pair barely run-in in vinyl terms with three sides looking barely marked at all. One side has very fine surface marks as seen critically under bright light, almost certainly present after being inserted into the cover after manufacture. Purely superficial and very fine indeed. Visually super records that should please most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play up to their high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly difficult album that does have some quiet passages. Few copies will match or outperform this top quality German pressing I feel sure. As stated, at this time, many records were pressed outside the UK, especially those predicted to be bigger sellers as British manufacturers were in decline. This is a superbly pressed set that I feel could hardly be bettered. Now played just twice after my mandatory sound-check, clearly well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these impressive records. This set will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended to those who want looks and top audio quality.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
