LENNIE NIEHAUS Vol 3 The Octet #2, RARE 1955 Jazz LP DG
Lennie Niehaus’s musicianship was phenomenally-developed and he was grounded in swing at a remarkably young age, even before he was exposed to Charlie Parker. So there is seemingly no limit on his musical ideas.
This is also a very rare collectible jazz disk with NM- sound.
The octet includes Niehaus, alto sax;; Bill Holman, tenor sax; Jimmy Giuffre, baritone sax; Stu Williamson, trumpet; Bob Enevoldsen, valve trombone; Pete Jolly, piano; Monty Budwig, bass; and Shelly Manne, drums.
The tunes are:
Side One: Blue Room, Rodgers & Hart; You and the Night and the Music, Schwartz & Dietz; Bunko, Niehaus; Love Is Here to Stay, George & Ira Gershwin; They Say It’s Wonderful, Irving Berlin; Rick’s Tricks, Niehaus.
Side Two: Rose Room, Williams & Hickman; Cooling It, Niehaus; Yes, Yes, Honey, Shanhon & Patterson; Debbie, Niehaus; Nice Work If You Can Get It, George & Ira Gershwin; Circling the Blues, Niehaus.
This monophonic recording, “Lennie Niehaus, Vol. 3: The Octet, No. 2” was released on Contemporary C 3503 in 1955. The label is yellow with black printing. This is a DEEP GROOVE pressing. The heavy, stiff vinyl is characteristic of an original recording.
I play-graded this album NM-. The mono sound is excellent with no surface noise.

Visually, under bright light, the vinyl still has a good shine, and there is a few minor hairline scratches, but nothing to affect the sound. I graded it NM-.
The front cover graphic is sharp. There are a few small scuffs and a little edge wear. But structurally it is solid. The back cover looks good, but shows a few age mottles. I would grade it a good VG+.
