Leslie Winer’s ‘Witch’ first appeared on white label vinyl in 1990. The results of two years of writing, looping, editing and experimenting, Leslie, alongside her collaborators (including Renegade Soundwave’s Karl Bonnie among others) had created what is now widely considered to be a lost classic.

Assuming the artist name © (‘I was thinking about intellectual property as a concept and the general freakiness of the notion of owning words’), Leslie set out to upend lazy misogynist preconceptions, the plain white packaging giving no clues as to who was behind it all. Her words to ‘N1 Ear’ spell this out; ‘…and what I look like is more important than what I do.’ Working as a ‘reluctant model for five junkie years,’ she found herself being photographed by everyone from Helmut Newton to Pierre & Gilles, appearing on the covers of magazines from Mademoiselle and Vogue (French, Italian and Australian) to The Face. As Leslie noted in a recent interview, ‘I’m also a former nasty alcoholic and former Tampax user, each for more than five years and with considerably more enthusiasm.’

Signing to Rhythm King subsidiary Transglobal, ‘Witch’ got lost in the machine… and by the time of its retail release in 1993, Leslie had already moved on. Described by the John Peel Archives as ‘the definition of a hidden gem’ and ‘trip hop before there was trip hop,’ according to the BBC, the album ‘Witch’ still sounds years ahead of itself.

Despite Leslie’s relatively unknown status in the mainstream this remains an underground classic of early 90s, lo-fi-dubby-weirdness. Originally released to little fanfare on Transglobal and later reissued by Virgin and EMI, the album earned Leslie the reputation as the “Grandmother of Trip-Hop” by NME.

The album has many obvious parallels with classics from the genre such as Massive Attack’s Blue Lines (released in 1991), Portishead’s Dummy (released in 1994) as well as much of Ninja Tunes back catalogue. Echoes of Tricky’s chasm deep, reverb heavy drum programming are clearly present on tracks like ‘Flove’. However it’s the patchwork feel of the albums production and choice of more abrasive and obscure samples (listen out for Wayne Smith’s ‘Sleng Teng’ in ‘The Boy Who Used to Whistle’) as well as a smoky, crackly ambience that lend this album a different quality. The album also features additional production from the likes of PiL’s Jah Wobble and one-time Culture Club vocalist Helen Terry.

Lyrically also Leslie brings something fresh and interesting, swapping the euphoric and dreamily ambiguous vocals more readily associated with the genre for a hard hitting and almost poetic spoken word approach. While opener ‘He Was’ paints a widescreen image of New York and all it’s street life as the century draws to a close with the repeating “born and bred in the heart of the city.”

This lo-fi aesthetic within ‘electronic’ music has seen a gradual revival in recent years with the likes of Maria Minerva (whose vocal style is also remarkably similar), Amanda Browns’ LA Vampires and Nicolas Jaar.

We offer combined shipping on all LPs / 12" Vinyls: our shipping rates are listed above. HOWEVER shipping packages that weigh more than 2kg is VERY expensive. Therefore we can only offer combined shipping up to a maximum of SIX (6) LPs / 12" vinyls. Any extra purchases will be invoiced, packaged and shipped separately.

COMBINED POSTAGE FOR DIFFERENT FORMATS will be invoiced at my discretion:

While I am happy to combine (for example) one or two 7” singles into one package with 12” records, sometimes it simply isn’t practical (like if you want me to combine one 12” record with three or more 7” records). I simply do not think that these combinations can be packaged together safely and securely. Therefore these will be invoiced separately as two packages.
