Half a century on, Cedric 'Im' Brooks' The Light Of Saba still feels less like a reggae LP and more like a gathering in motion. First released in 1974 on Total Sounds, it sits at a junction where nyabinghi drumming, jazz phrasing and Rastafari devotion meet: Brooks, wavering between sax, flute and percussion, leads a loose rather than fixed band, The Divine Light becoming The Light Of Saba, echoing the communal and loosely identified approach of figures like Sun Ra and his various arkestral aliases, though remaining firmly on Kingston soil. The likes of 'Sabasi' and 'Chants' hold up for their patient turns, bowling steadily through funde and repeater drums, horns circling above.
