'S/T'
GSF, UK, 1972
GS 501
THIS IS an interesting one for a number of reasons. An American based hard rock band found and groomed by British impresario Adrian Miller (he died a few years ago by the way) who produced this album in New York. The album was released in both the USA and the UK - the latter via EMI - to zero interest and it sunk without trace. Then, by some bizarre twist of fate, the band were re 'discovered' by Terry Knight, Grand Funk's manager and Svengali who signed them (with a changed name to Faith) to his newly formed Brown Bag imprint. It was Knight's ambition to do for Faith what he had done with Grand Funk - ie turn them into million sellers in the US...an ambition never realised. By this time a new album was released yet it contained a number of tracks released on this album!
Music is gritty and soulful not a million miles removed from GFR or Bloodrock, sometimes heavy, proggy and sometimes bluesy. The vocalist is exceptional, especially on 'Such A Lady, Such A Lover', and the other players are all really good. The style brings to mind Sugarloaf, Bloodrock or Grand Funk...bluesy mainly hard rock with some slower gentle numbers and a few ballads. 'Best track is 'Barriers' which sounds like pure Grand Funk Railroad.
Whilst I've occasionally seen copies of the US release I've never found a UK variant until now! This one has a different front cover and looks like it's never been handled - about as good as it gets - really nice and very rare!
