 When life deals you lemons, you make lemonade. After the tremendous failure of The Fire's 1983 cosmic voyage, Electric Universe, the legendary band came crashing down to Earth. After a four-year hiatus and a few solo efforts, a reformed EW&F picked up the pieces and released Touch The World, which I consider to be their "down to Earth" album.

The album has a much more street feel than ever before, with much attitude and plenty of "boom-bap" in almost every cut. The joints to cue up here are "System Of Survival", which challenges everyday stress with dance; "Evil Roy", for those cats that stay doin' nuthin'; "Thinking Of You", another slick R&B cut; and "Touch The World", whihc features the Hawkins Family and is the first gospel joint from this group since "Burnin' Bush" off their '76 album, Spirit. This album stands out because of its era-appropriateness at the time of release.

I'm glad to see copies of this available because ANY fan of
Earth,Wind & Fire should here this. Yes it's  a smaller lineup but
techno-funk beasts like "System Of Survival", "Evil Roy"," Thinking
Of You", "Money Tight" and "Victim Of A Modern Heart" are worthy
of inclusion on ANY EWF best-of package! And with the gospel of the title track, the pretty "Here Today And Gone Tomorrow" and
the instrumental "New Horizons" which recalls past hits this
is EWF's last full-album classic.

Cray's commercial breakthrough. The single 'Smokin' Gun" spearheaded yet another blues revival. This album is a strong collection of blues and R&B-based songs steeped in the tradition of Bobby Bland, 0. V. Wright, Stax Records, and guitar stylings of equal parts Steve Cropper and Albert Collins. The songs are thematically linked-all deal with cheating and its ramifications-and give Cray an anguished, contemporary persona.

Stinging urban blues by way of Texas and Memphis distinguish Robert Cray's major-label debut, which followed three strong independent releases. Here he fleshes out his sound with bursts of brassy Southern soul courtesy of theMemphis Horns, but keeps his pungent, steely guitar solos out front in an engaging dialogue with his plaintive vocals. Released in 1986, Strong Persuader signaled that Cray, as a writer--like his contemporary Stevie Ray Vaughan--had something to say about his interior life beyond the usual blues man's laments, an approach that pays homage to the music's rich traditions while suggesting new areas of inquiry.

ANY LOVE -  Luther - the man who put the dance band CHANGE on the map, the man who did the amazing vocal arrangements for David Bowie's groundbreaking YOUNG AMERICANS and toured with Bowie for many years, who lulled us all into love in the 80's - has the chops and  then some with some truly great albums. And this one, with I Wonder, Any Love, For You To Love, I Wonder and the cover of Love Won't Let Me Wait (This song nearly belongs to HIM now!!!) He is right up there with AL Green. I don't wish to compare these great men, however.  Luther was on tour with Anita Baker in NYC when this album was out and he nearly blew Ms. Baker off the stage. And this was when she could do no wrong (early in her boom period). He had the women in the audience nearly fainting in their seats and the men hooping & hollering & slapping five to his power. He's still the King of Romance,.

This 1986 album -- on the Rounder label, which picked up other greats who were dropped by major labels -- shows one of the great soul singers of all time in prime form. From the sweetness of the opening track, "Love Buys Love" to the uptempo shouting of Burke's own "Got to Get Myself Some Money" to the wistfully hopeful (and brilliant) cover of Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come," this album is a triumph. It grows on you, and then grows some more. Soul at its best.

By the end of the 70s, Lionel Richie was emerging as a star within the successful R&B group The Commodores. They had began as a funk band but found greater commercial success by focusing on pop ballads, the most successful of which were written and performed by Richie. After penning the biggest hit in Motown history - "Endless Love", a duet with Diana Ross - Richie was sure that he could pursue a successful solo career, and quit The Commodores at the end of 1981.

His conviction was not misplaced. A self-titled debut solo album sold over four million copies, but Can't Slow Down (1983) far exceeded that: thanks to over a year spent in the Top 10, and the Album of the Year Grammy, it sold over 20 million copies worldwide. Two massive hit singles from that album - "Hello" and "All Night Long (All Night)" - are usually considered Richie's signature songs. His third solo album, Dancing on the Ceiling (1986), was another multi-platinum success, and featured the chart-topping "Say You, Say Me".

Richie took a well-deserved break after Dancing on the Ceiling, and didn't release an album of new songs for 10 years. Although he has failed to enjoy any further charting singles, his newer albums still sell several hundred-thousand copies each.
