February 13th....
In music history, February 13th has a poignance and resonance like no other date in February.
Although it is the date of birth of the great musicians, Albert Schweitzer, Leopold Godowsky, Feodor Chaliapin and Eileen Farrell, there is yet ... one other....who re-defined an entire genre in substance and form, one whose influence resonates in style and substance.....even in 2008.
In commemoration of the date of death of Richard Wagner, February 13th, 1883, I offer a number of notable historic recordings.
The Wagner World, The Wagner influence..... Enter father in law, Franz Liszt and the large symphonic poem, TASSO.
In my 2005-2007 commemorations , I showcased recordings and antiquarian ephemera relating to the wide ranging influence of Wagner.
Specifically, I focused on the great musicological divide spawned by Wagner's RING creating pro and con musical camps:the pro-Wagner circle of Hector Berlioz,Anton Bruckner,Von Bulow, Hans Richter and its French Symbolist supporters:Cesar Franck and Ernest Chausson and the anti-Wagner circle,represented by Johannes Brahms and the followers of German symphonic tradition.
Offered is a rarely performed work of Cosima Wagner's father, Franz Liszt, the symphonic poem MAZEPPA.
Rarely encountered, offered is a beautiful copy of the premiere recording of it in the mid 1920s on two Polydor acoustic 78s .
The great Oskar Fried conducts The Berlin Staatsoper.
