Description
Here we have what appears to be a rare re-release of the 1956 Lizzy Miles LP "Torchy Lullabies My Mother Sang Me" on Cook Laboratories 1184. Lizzy Miles (1895-1963) was a Creole Blues Singer. She worked with Joe Oliver, Kid Ory, Bunk Johnson, and A.J. Piron, from 1909-1911. She then toured the South, performing in theatres, circuses, and with minstrel shows. In 1917 she sang in Chicago with Manuel Manetta, and in 1921 with Freddie Keppard, Charlie Elgar, and again with Oliver. She moved to New York and made her first phonograph recordings in 1922. She toured Europe a number of times and worked with Jelly Roll Morton and Fats Waller. In 1958 she appeared at the Newport Jazz Fest and retired in 1859.
Emory Cook (1913-2002) was an audio engineer and inventor who used his "Sounds of our Times" and "Cook" record labels to demonstrate his philosophy about sound, his recording equipment, and his manufacturing techniques. From 1952 to 1966, Cook recorded, manufactured, and distributed some of the highest quality audio recordings in the world. This was the first "Audiophile Label" and they were the most expensive records on the market. Cook introduced two channel stereo records in 1952 which he called "binaural" with two separate grooves and required a tonearm adapter with two pickups. In 1957 he went to the standard V groove 45/45 stereo system standard today. His micro-fusion process of pressing records produced the finest quality records ever known.
This 1956 recording is in true stereo and is a very fine quality recording. I assume that this particular pressing is from the early 1960's but have not been able to find another with the same cover and label. It is apparently a rarity. The condition is absolutely suburb, like new for both the LP and the cover. Both grade NM.
