LOS CHEYENES - "He perdido este juego"/"Tú no llegaste a mí" 7" (RCA Victor 3-10153, Spain, 1966)
This is the first single (between their second and third Ep's) by Barcelona's punks (and personal faves) Los Cheyenes. They were by far the wildest combo -both personally and musically- to come out from Barcelona (Poble Sec, a rough neighborhood) in the mid 60's. They were famous for having the longest hair out of all the spanish beat groups. They used to get in trouble countless times with club owners, local priests, TV censorers, tour promoters, policemen and public in general. They even had to carry motorcycle chains for self deffense against aggresive squares. A fearsome and ugly gang indeed! Just look at the picture sleeve! "Quinqui" and "Macarra" are two words in spanish slang that seem tailor made to define their style. To be a longhair in Franco's 1960's Spain was no joke! You can read their complete story in "Ugly Things" magazine (issue #12). There were also many other great beat, mod and rock and roll bands from Barcelona at that time, such as Los Salvajes, Los Sirex, Los Gatos Negros, Lone Star, Los No... but none as wild as Los Cheyenes.
They were very influenced by the early Kinks, The Beatles, The Pretty Things and The Rolling Stones, but sounding more amateurish due to the low budget recordings and their limited but effective skills as players/singers (they were around 17-19 years old at the time). Their records don't do them any justice, as I've been told by various witnesses of their live shows. They have three 4-track Ep's and two singles (see my other auctions for more of these!), which are well worth searching. Good luck, by the way!

The songs on this record:
"He perdido este juego" (I've lost this game) is a fast beat song, with shouted angry vocals, great guitar breaks and a wild harmonica. Somewhere between the Beatles and the Pretty Things. "Tú no llegaste a mí" (You didn't come to me) is a jangly Beatles-Byrds influenced number, with nice vocal harmonies, not unlike some of the best Los Brincos. If the comparison is allowed, I'd say it sounds like a rough version of "Lying all the time" by the dutch band the Outsiders.

This record (especially "He perdido este juego") would fit perfectly in compilations such as "Transworld Punk", "Infernal World", "Diggin' for Gold", "Hide 'n' Seek", "The World for us", "At the Club", etc... As far as I know, it hasn't been compiled yet. If you dig obscure european beat, this will be one of the very few chances to get one of spanish beat's most difficult to find records.

Condition: Cover is VG+, clean but with some minor creases and wear, and two rubber stamps on the back cover. Vinyl is VG with some surface noise that can be evident in the slower moments. No jumps or scratches. It plays better than it looks. If you are a hi fi obsessive, this might not be for you, and chances are you are not interested in this kind of records. For garage and punk standards, it sounds just great.
