LOU DONALDSON      “SUNNY SIDE UP”

1960 BLUE NOTE 4036 ORIGINAL WEST 61ST STREET,

MONO RVG, WITH THE EAR ETC.

WITH DONALDSON IS THE GREAT HORACE PARLAN (WHO COULD PLAY MORE MUSIC WITH LESS FINGERS THAN ANYONE). THE SET IS VINTAGE DONALDSON HARD BOP WITH A FUNKY EDGE A REALLY FINE SET WITH GREAT WORK BY SAM JONES AND THE FOREVER UNDERRATED BILL HARDMAN .

THERE IS ALSO AN EXCELLENT SET OF LINER NOTES BY NAT HENTOFF, THE RECORDING IS VINTAGE VAN GELDER EVERYONE IN THEIR RIGHT PERSPECTIVE AND IMPECCABLY BALANCED.

The sleeve is beautiful pretty much near mint or lets say a high excellent, with no ring wear, not splits, no spine chips, just a bit of yellowing in the white ‘UP’ and a small ding on the lower right entry and upper left. The back has some darkening on the entry side, a light stain on the lower entry corner, and a small one on the right edge halfway down. (please look carefully at the pixs). 

THIS PARTICULAR RECORD (the vinyl) FRUSTRATES ME A LITTLE AS IT IS AN INSIDIOUS VG+ SIDE 1 AND VG SIDE 2, I am offering it as a VG because I hate the imperfection.

THE SURFACE HAS GOOD LUSTER, WHEN IT PLAYS THE BACKGROUND IS NICE AND QUIET AND CLEAN, BUT THERE ARE A NUMBER OF SURFACE SCUFFS AND SCRATCHES THAT OCCASIONALLY EMERGE.

NO LOUD POPS JUST A MINOR SCRATCH NOISE THERE AND HERE THAT MAKES IT LESS THAN IDEAL.

THE DISC PLAYS AND SOUNDS VERY GOOD AND I CAN LOSE MYSELF IN THE MUSICAL EXPERIENCE, NO SKIPS OR ANYTHING OVER THE TOP, AND AS I SAID NO DETERIORATION OF THE OVERALL SURFACE SOUND, BUT THERE ARE A FEW MINOR DISTRACTIONS.

I am a hard grader and my system is unforgiving, I use an ortophon 2 red with an audio-technica 1240, a marantz pm 5005 and bowers and wilkins speakers, little escapes unheard and i listen to the entire record. Before you purchase a record from me I want you to know exactly what you are getting.  

I am including the inner sleeve but have placed the disc in a MOFI anti-scratch, anti-static master sleeve.

This is a collectors disc in better than good shape, but less than what I would consider ideal: my description is accurate and I am pricing it accordingly if it was nm it would sell for 450 (please see my other listings).
