HERE ARE two utterly great and entertaining records by LOUIS ARMSTRONG:
PARLOPHONE R 1573 "Sweet Savannah Sue" / "(What Did I Do to be So) Black and Blue." Louis in July, 1929, with the Carroll Dickerson band, in two songs heavily featured in "Connie's Hot Chocolates." This New York show marked the beginning of Louis' great "popular" career, when he switched over from home-grown jazz material, to recognizable pop and show tunes, and became ever the "Front Man." "Black and Blue" has one of his most harsh and pitiless vocals, cutting to the essence of "how it was to be 'colored.'" He lets Whitey have it with both barrels! EE+ condition, master pressed, both sides. Not grainy!
COLUMBIA DZ 541 "Chicago Breakdown" / "Don't Jive Me" A unique Armstrong record, this dates to Chicago in 1927, when he fronted a band at the Sunset Café. This band features ARMSTRONG, BILL WILSON (trumpets), HONORE DUTREY (trombone), BOYD ATKINS, JOE WALKER, ALBERT WASHINGTON (reeds), EARL HINES (piano), RIP BASSETT (banjo), PETE BRIGGS (tuba), TUBBY HALL (drums). This was Louis' regular working band, which - dammit! - recorded only this ONE side! A Jelly Roll Morton composition, to boot. "Don't Jive Me" is on the flip, from 1928. It's the later Hot Five, also with Earl Hines. These two sides remained unissued for years, only coming to the surface in 1940. This Columbia may be regarded as an original issue. Both sides master pressed, nice shellac! EE+.

I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all. If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will!
