Label Conditions: Both immaculate: ultra clean, fresh and attractive with only one or two ultra light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Without doubt, hardly even played.

Cat Number: SHVL 787.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. A very good solid weight.

Rarity: Quite rare as a genuine first issue. This was a very late pre-EMI issue and it hardly sold in any great numbers and soon repressed with the inclusion of the small boxed logo at the 9 o’clock position on the labels.

Brief Info: The final Love album on Harvest and famed for featuring a late appearance by Jimi Hendrix on ‘The Everlasting First’. An album of shorter songs after some of the expansive tracks on the previous double set. This copy in lovely condition, the record looks fantastic and plays like new. A very difficult cover also in very fine condition, the front exceptional with just a little mild surface rubbing on the back that few, if any will avoid totally. One of the last made prior to the EMI logo inclusion on the labels, this is a rare album as an original and in this condition.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+). PLEASE NOTE: I took one picture with flash (front) and one without (back) to try and show any rubbing more clearly. Using a flash tends exaggerate rubbing on black covers - this is why one side may appear darker than the other, but both are pretty much the same when seen for real. This is an unlaminated gatefold format with the outside being textured. The inside is smooth and matt. Made with fairly thin soft card, hence vulnerable to just about all forms of wear. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group.

Cover Front: Exceptional and it has to be the best I have yet seen. Barely any creasing and any traces of rubbing or speckle, tiny, few and very faint. This retains an intense black finish and has hardly aged at all. A superb front that will be hard to match.

Cover Back: The back is clearly massively prone to rim impression and ring wear and few, if any really will be seen without it. So in terms of this, this back has escaped very lightly with only fine and faint arcs near the top and bottom. A little gentle surface rubbing or mild speckle is seen mostly just above half-way and traces near the bottom edge. Again in terms of this cover, only very light and faint and little detracts from this exceptional example that again has hardly any creasing at all.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The smooth inside is little short of as made and looks fantastic.

Top Edges: Any rub traces to these black surfaces are ultra fine and faint, both remain very straight too.

Bottom Edges: A fraction more hint of rub traces, but being the traditional storage edges, few will appear better.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring very mild and faint. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight and thick with barely any compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. Hardly a hint of any surface rubbing and both fold hinges are the same – that a massive bonus as the spine folds are incredibly vulnerable. I have checked closely for tip-ins, but I cannot see any evidence of any. All text is perfect and unworn as can be seen on my close-up pictures.

Corners: A little tip rubbing and to the very tip of the spine top. Again, how many will ever avoid minor wear like this? All retain very fineto excellent shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very fragile early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. A little minor surface rubbing is almost the least anyone could expect and with more seen with full penetrating ring wear, scuffed and badly rubbed surfaces – often with heavy creasing and tears to the fragile card, it puts one like this into true context. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a plain solid unlined inner that has aged little. One crease and unavoidable rim impression but any discolouration mild and light. All edges unsplit with no repairs. The includes the ‘PATENT APPLIED FOR’ text and is guaranteed original.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. There are NO penetrating scratches on this record. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This elusive Harvest original plays even above it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will match or outperform this first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
