12” Album
THE BEATLES
With The Beatles
1st Australian ‘MONO’ issue (22 Feb 1964)
CONDITION
VINYL : a beaut heavy duty piece here at over 150 grams !! / heaps of shine and a few light surface scuffs only / plays through lovely … very crisp and clear / no lead-in and lead-out sound on the dead-wax and no background noise between tracks either / in fact the only blemish sound-wise is a half-blip on ‘Money’ though this might not be audible on a different turntable / pretty difficult to fault really and easily worthy of an EX.LABELS :- Both labels are clean / some spindle marks near hole / no writing or marks etc / no fading at all / clear & distinct gold print / much fewer numbers of this LP were pressed her in Australia and hence there are no numbers found in the dead-wax at 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock that you find on the UK issues.
SLEEVE : terrific / glossy laminated front with some small crease marks and a hint of ring-wear only / the corners are quite good / no edge-wear or splits and the spine is intact / more pronounced ring-wear on the non-laminated back along with sporadic light age-wear spots / no writing and a most impressive example.
DESCRIPTION
An excellent copy of easily the 2nd rarest of the Australian released Beatles albums …. the highly collectable 1964 Black and Gold original Mono ‘With The Beatles’ LP issued in the fold-back cover…..also long regarded one of the more desirable Australian issues of all their albums contents-wise.The first pressings both of ‘Please Please Me’ and ‘With The Beatles’ released in Australia featured a gold-text on black base design that was based on the labels which graced the first two UK pressings of ‘Please Please Me’. Although the gold/black style had long-since been phased-out in the UK prior to the Australian release of ‘With The Beatles’, EMI (Australia) nevertheless retained the gold label for the second Beatles album. Somewhat 'busier' than the UK original, these Australian gold labels still possess a certain antique charm which is reflected in their market-value. The Black and Gold label lasted until March, 1964 when the album was eventually re-pressed in the more familiar Black and Yellow label.
Most collectors would be aware that the cover here, with it’s pink lettering and different photo-shots on the black background, is exclusive to Australian issues and it also features the 50’s style Parlophone ‘logo-box’ at the top R/H corner which also differs to overseas releases of this album.
Trivia buffs are probably also aware of the clanger on the back cover notes by Tony Barrow where, in the third last paragraph, ‘our side of The Atlantic’ is mentioned.
One listen to this and you can understand why these ‘mono’ Beatles albums are so sought after …especially in 1964 when ‘stereo’ was in its infancy. Another point of note is that most collectors would naturally assume that the UK Parlophone pressings are of better quality than elsewhere … this is proven otherwise here as Australian (and NZ issues for that matter) have deeper grooves , more dB and consistently play louder as well as cleaner….the upshot of all this is that the extremely loud and richer bass sound is very noticeable in comparison.
A timeless classic and quite serious collector’s item.
