Description

This is the ultra-rare, original, First UK Pressing of "BLACK SABBATH" on the VERTIGO "Swirl" label; cat.no. VO 6 released in 1970 on vinyl LP.

You can identify it as a genuine First Pressing because it has (a) the "A PHILIPS RECORD PRODUCT" underneath the "VERTIGO" logo on the Side B label; (b) on the inside cover it lists the band members (inc. "Ossie" Osbourne) in CAPITAL LETTERS (upper case text); (c) has the "WARNING-Copyright subsists in all Stereo recordings" text at the bottom of the cross (later editions have this corrected from "Stereo" to "Vertigo") &, (d) has no Composers or, Publishers credits on the cover (these are included, in lower case letters on subsequent pressings).

 The Matrix numbers are hard to accurately read, but I decipher them as : VO 6 1Y X 1 420 12 1  & VO 6 2Y X 1 420 12 2.

The vinyl is strictly graded by me as VG+ having some surface marking, but no major scratches & certainly no jumps!  Most first issues of this album were played to death or, used as beer mats @ parties, so finding one in as good a condition as this is almost unheard of ! The one I'm hanging on to is only marginally better !  The aural experience when played on my highly sensitive Linn Sondek LP 12 turntable is still rich & LOUD; however, there are some noticeable crackles & the odd click on the (few !) quieter passages. The overall sound quality is very good.

The trademark "Swirl" VERTIGO black & White labels are in Very Good order. However, for some unknown reason, the previous owner has applied a very small black felt-tip "dot" just in front of the "SIDE A" print on the large logo side. It is hardly noticeable, but I want to give you a truly accurate picture. As stated earlier the label has the "A PHILIPS RECORD PRODUCT" under the VERTIGO logo on label Side B.

The inner "Swirl" bag/sleeve is in excellent order. The Gatefold cover is made of slightly thicker &, again, slightly more textured card than the later issues. This one is in near Excellent condition with no outside creases, no writing & a straight & true spine. A tiny nick on the front right, top corner (where a price label has been) & some creasing next to the inside spine (common in this type of design) prevents me from grading as Excellent+.

I'm trying to grade this item as strictly & fairly as is possible. As a true collector myself, I know how important this is. I possibly tend to over criticise & thus grade more strictly than some would, but I prefer to be totally upfront on this.
