This album has it all going on! 60's Rock and Roll, Drag Racing at the legendary Lions Drag Strip in Long Beach, CA with record-breaking Hayden Proffitt and his 427 Mercury-Comet Cyclone. Hayden was the first stocker to turn under 10ET. 9.95ET @ 142 mph.

Titled HAYDEN PROFFITT presents JIM HEAD and his DEL-RAYS, THERE WERE ONLY 600 OF THESE ALBUMS CUT. The lead song is COMET CYCLONE. There are 10 additional songs on the 33 rpm album, including DEL-RAY ROCK, LET IT BE ME, WEST LA, THEY CALL ME MISTER LONELY and DRUMS ARE MY NAME featuring a drum solo by Jim Head. The record is in very good condition. The album cover is is in excellent condition with the exception of a crease in the lower right-hand corner.

25,000 saw Hayden Proffitt on August 29, 1965 set a new record in his 427 Mercury-Comet Cyclone at Lions Drag Strip, then while the crowd was still roaring, he posed with Jim Head and the Del-Rays.

A little about Lions Drag Strip- Opening day was Oct 9, 1955 in Wilmington Ca, not far from Long Beach. By the late 50's, LIONS had become a legend. Located right at sea level, the wonderful dense air (called rare air by the racers) and wonderful traction made for unparalleled racing. The track was universally recognized as the world's fastest and quickest drag strip. Ultimately, the strip's lease was canceled by the Harbor Commission to make way for the expansion of the harbor. The last race was run on December 2, 1972 with over 20,000 fans showing up. The world's quickest and fastest drag strip was replaced with a warehouse for Japanese watches!

The rare album is a must have for the collector of 60's nostalgia, Lions Drag Strip memorabilia and vintage limited edition record albums with wonderful covers. Too cool! I will be listing an original fender cover with the legendary LIONS DRAG STRIP EMBLEM that was awarded in the mid-60's to class winners. See last photo. A rare find!
