As a matter of fact, the Novos Baianos group were much much more than a musical group: They lived together in a hippie community, a farm ("O Cantinho do Vovô" = "The Grandpa's Corner") in Boca do Mato, Vargem Pequena, a semirural region, in Rio de Janeiro City. They performed crazies Super-8 movies directed by Galvão (the guru of the community), they had a soccer team ("Novos Baianos Futebol Clube") and many other freaky things!
All things worked totally free, conceptually speaking: they were greatly influenced by Tropicália movement, but they were a little more radical in their musical style. Their music and influences mixed Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Trio Elétrico, Gal Costa, Jacob do Bandolim, Jimi Hendrix, Waldir Azevedo, Cream, Beatles, João Gilberto, John Lennon, Assis Valente, roots of Regional Northeastern Music, Dorival Caymmi, which resulted in great and melodic counterpoints lines that remind us of Jimi Hendrix and Jacob do Bandolim.
Their music was also hardly influenced by the use of psychedelic drugs such as LSD, Mushroom Tea and Marijuana.
