DESCRIPTION
A terrific Aussie pressing of this 1971 classic offering from The Stones ….right up there with their best and one heck of a rock album. With the end of their Decca/London association at hand, The Rolling Stones were finally free to release their albums (cover art and all) as they pleased.
Sticky Fingers is further proof of greatness from the legendary Rolling Stones during the high-times stretch fom 1968 through 1972, when the English group were at the zenith of their recording career. Sticky Fingers showcases the boys rollin' with full-on swagger. The incredible songwriting talents of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are on display throughout the album as the duo penned several classics here.
REVIEW
Opening strong with the upbeat "Brown Sugar", which is chased by "Sway" and the mellow "Wild Horses", the Stones' hit their stride on the rollicking, seven-minute cruise through "Can't You Hear Me Knocking". Billy Preston accented the raucous "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" with organ fills. The hot recording also includes the souped-up "You Gotta Move", the bad ass "Bitch", and the laid back "Sister Morphine".All 10 of the tracks here feature the stones at the top of their game . All the stones work from 68-72 is essential , but "Sticky Fingers" captures the sound of a band back on the road again with Mick Taylor on guitar and you can hear the difference from "Let It Bleed" . They sound hungry and cohesive as a band in a way they hadn’t since "Aftermath".
So many highlights here , the ghostly "Sister Morphine" with Ry Cooders malevolent slide guitar , "Bitch" and "Brown Sugar" are filthy rockers with horns that could knock a wall down , the majestic string enhanced "Moonlight Mile" or how about the way "Cant You Hear Me Knocking" a rather average rock track evolves into a latin jam reminiscent of Santana ? This is the bands best album "musically" so to speak - the playing is amazing throughout . Just listen to their new guitarist let loose on "Sway" …. and the distraught but devoted "Wild Horses" remains the best country heartbreak composed by non americans . Which leaves "You Gotta Move" which is often scorned even though its clearly the bands best straight blues cover , and "Dead Flowers" which is probably the slightest cut here yet doesn’t in any way detract from the quality present with its wry lyric and barroom chug whilst showing Gram Parsons hanging out with the band resulted in a reciprocal influence.
This is their absolute peak, "Exile" was a glorious way of going down fighting , and although the group continued to produce great work sporadically after 1972 , this is THE ONE !!
