The Switch: In mid-1973, Dylan temporarily left Columbia Records to sign with Asylum Records for his next album, Planet Waves (1974).

The Reaction: Columbia was reportedly angered by the departure of their star artist. They quickly assembled this album using tracks that had been recorded during the 1970 sessions for the controversial Self Portrait album and the subsequent New Morning album, but had been left unfinished and unreleased.

The Purpose: The album was essentially a contractual obligation release, an attempt by the label to capitalize on Dylan's back catalog and potentially recoup some money while their artist was with a rival label.
