🎸 The Artist: Mountain
Often called the "American Cream," Mountain was a heavy blues-rock powerhouse led by two legends:
-
Leslie West: A guitar titan known for his massive tone and soulful, gritty vocals.
-
Felix Pappalardi: The bassist and producer who actually produced Cream’s Disraeli Gears.
-
The Lineup: Features the "classic" era with Corky Laing on drums and Steve Knight on keyboards.
🎵 The Music: Why This Record is Legendary
The album is a "short but heavy" collection of four tracks recorded between 1969 and 1972.
1. The Hip-Hop Connection ("Long Red")
Surprisingly, the most famous part of this rock record isn't a guitar solo. The live version of "Long Red" contains a drum break and Leslie West shouting "Put your hands in the air!" that became one of the most sampled moments in music history. It has been used by Kanye West, Jay-Z, J Dilla, and Eric B. & Rakim.
2. The Side B Epic ("Nantucket Sleighride")
The entire second side is a nearly 18-minute version of their masterpiece, "Nantucket Sleighride." It is an improvisational journey that showcases why Mountain was considered one of the best live acts of the early 70s.
