As The birthing ground FOR legendary blues-rock guitarist Billy Gibbons,One would expect at leastATasteof what would later make ZZ TopOneof The best touring and recording bandsOnThe planet; sadly,The album offers little inThe wayofRevelation in its 15 tracks. Admittedly, at The Timeof ZZ Top's 1970 debut, Gibbons' transformationFromA journeyman bandleader intoA boogie blues demigod whatSTILL not fully realized, butHIS chops were miles away From what is heard here. Part of that lies in The fact that ZZ Top was less about psychedelia than straight blues; whateverPsychedelic touches made their way ontoThe studio albums were largely an accessory. (They would eventually fully integrate On 1979's Deguello.) TheMOVING SIDEWALKS ,OnThe other hand, werePsychedelic rockers whose songs hinted atThe bluesWithout fully diving in. The songs show little of Gibbons' future promise, and in fact are so thoroughly mediocre (both in writing and playing) that it's amazing To think he was onlyA few years awayFrom international success. "Pluto Sept. 31st" shows A clear Hendrix influence ( TheTwo guitarists openly admired each other), and asA bonus,Akarma 's reissue includesFIVE bonus singles that are someofThe strongest material OnThe album, especially "Need Me," "I WantTo Hold Your Hand," andThe legendary single "99th Floor."
