In the wake of Teenage Jesus & The Jerks, New York no wave queen Lydia Lunch struck out solo with her debut album, Queen Of Siam. She had already been busy working with former bandmate James Chance on some of his Contortions work, and you can hear a little of that influence in the angular punk-funk of tracks like 'Atomic Bongos' and Pat Irwin's skronky sax which is splattered all over the album. It's a brilliant, often overlooked record with a standout cover of 'Spooky' and Lunch's irrepressible attitude bursting out everywhere. If you love the sound of early 80s New York, this is essential listening.
