• ALL MUSIC GUIDE REVIEW>>>After being a drummer for artists like Ray Charles and Gene Ammons, and releasing several numbers under a group banner, Johnny Lytle settles in to find his own niche as a soloist. A Groove was the debut release for the Ohioan. Unlike most of his predessors, Johnny Lytle's music has an African/Cuban flavor, paced by Lytle's vibes and an always-outstanding conga playe; Willie Rodriguez takes the accolades on this outing. One of the most popular jazz recordings that Lytle ever undertook is the classic "The Village Caller." Set in a mellow tone and measured by Milt Harris' looping organ chords, Lytle's exciting, yet tranquil delivery is augmented by a steady percussive backbeat. The energized "On Green Dolphin Street" is headed up with Lytle playing a few quiet bars in the intro. As he segues into the melodic verses, Rodriguez makes the presence of his congas known with a pulverizing rhythm and Milt Harris' groovin' organ chords build a steady rhythm before taking center stage with a big band style solo. Lytle keeps his stride with "Unhappy, Happy Soul"; suggestive of its title, this cut begins with a very despondent, sorrowful account before bowing to a cheerful, elating groove. In addition to some other notable ballads, Lytle serves up a bluesy rendition of the Duke Ellington standard "Solitude." With selections like the above-mentioned tunes and the music's wide acceptance during its time, Lytle enjoyed much success with record sales as his career began to evolve. Craig Lytle
