Here for your collection is my personally autographed copy from Larry of his 1975 Strata-East recording “Sum Of The Parts”. Director of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University and Professor of Jazz Bass at Manhattan School of Music, Larry has been an integral part of the development of the New York Jazz scene of the 60’s and 70’s. Hank Mobley, Jackie McLean, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Horace Silver, Dexter Gordon, Roy Haynes, Larry recorded with them all and more.

On this album, he joins alto saxophonist Sonny Fortune along with “Onaje” Allan Gumbs on Keyboards, Grady Tate Drums , Cornell DuPree guitar and Errol “Crusher” Bennett on Congas and percussion.

Tunes vary from Monk’s “Well You Needn’t” to Duke’s “In a Sentimental Mood” with originals from Ridley and Gumbs.  Well featured is Ridley’s articulate melodic and rhythmic  style and I found Gumb’s work here very involved and compelling as well both acoustically and electronically.

The Strata-East formula of musician produced albums produced many thoughtful musical projects and this album is another good example of discipline and execution that equals art. This is not some loose jam album but instead reflects positively on the dedication, hard work and creativity of the participants.
