'Following the staggering reunion triumph at the O2, which I was lucky enough to be at, with interest in Led Zeppelin greater than ever, with the site for the Ahmettribute.com tribute concert receiving an unbelievable 120 million hits, with 25 million people apparently registering for a Zeppelin ticket, its as good a time as any to invest in an original copy early press of this classic Zep album.'

An Ultra Rare 1st pressing from Led Zeppelin,  from my own personal collection.

LED ZEPPELIN 3 WAS A GROUNDBREAKING ALBUM WHICH HIT THE CHARTS ON 7th NOVEMBER 1970, AND STAYED THERE FOR A TOTAL OF 40 WEEKS. HIGHEST POSITION: no.1 IN THE UK AND THE USA, AND A UK ENTRY AT no. 1.

100% GENUINE 1970 UK 'EARLIEST' 1ST PRESSING WITH 1ST PRESS TEXT ON THE RED/PLUM ATLANTIC LABELS and Rarest Cover Variant!!!!

GENUINE EARLY PRESSINGS OF LED ZEPPELIN III ARE RARE, WITH A NUMBER OF FEATURES THAT DISTINGUISH THEM FROM ALL OTHER COPIES THAT WERE TO FOLLOW. THE MOST IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE THAT APPLIES TO 1ST PRESSINGS IS THAT TOWARDS THE TOP OF EACH LABEL ABOVE THE WHITE STRIPE, PRINTED IN LARGE TEXT IS ; - 'PRODUCED BY JIMMY PAGE', AND BELOW THIS 'EXECUTIVE PRODUCER: PETER GRANT'. THIS EXECUTIVE PRODUCER CREDIT CAN ONLY BE FOUND ON THE VERY FIRST EVER UK PRESSINGS.

THIS LABEL FORMAT WAS CHANGED VERY QUICKLY, AND THE 'JIMMY PAGE' CREDIT WAS MOVED TO THE BOTTOM OF EACH LABEL (IN SMALLER TEXT) ON ALL LATER RE-PRESSINGS - WITH THE 'PETER GRANT' CREDIT BEING COMPLETELY REMOVED ALTOGETHER!!!!

ANOTHER  DIFFERENCE IN THE 'CAT. NUMBER' ON THE LABELS!!!!  1ST PRESSINGS HAVE THE CAT. NUMBER AS '2401002' JOINED TOGETHER - WHERE AS ALL LATER PRESSINGS INSERT AN EXTRA 'DASH' AND SHOW THE CAT. NUMBER AS '2401-002'.

FIRST PRESS COVERS ALSO HAD NO WRITING ON THE BACK AND HAD AN UNUSUAL OPEN FORMAT AT THE TOP AND BOTTOM OF THE FRONT SLEEVE, QUICKLY REPLACED BY MORE TRADITIONAL FORMAT GATEFOLDS. A TINY FRACTION OF THESE COVERS WERE PRODUCED WITH THE RED AND WHITE KINNEY STICKER ON THE INSIDE, MAKING HTIS AN ULTIMATE RARITY.

ALBUM PLAYED FOR GRADING:

Zep III is a complex and varied collection of music, and is a VERY sensitive piece of vinyl, extremely hard to find in clear audio condition. Worn copies can have a lot of surface sound, pops and clicks,  even on musically complex and busy tracks like 'Gallows Pole.' This pressing has strong undistorted audio, with clear sound and minimal background static. There is certainly no dominant interference or distortion what so ever. A few slight blemishes, it really sounds amazing and plays with great sound separation and clarity!

Superb sound, every track has been tested. Wonderful TOP audio, there is NO distortion, NO sticks or jumps what so ever, and little static between the tracks. Great music with great clarity, and so hard to find with this type of sound. I will give a detailed account below:

Even for Led Zeppelin, their third album is a complex and varied collection of music, and extremely hard to find in clear audio condition. This pressing has crystal clear audio, with barely any light static, and NO loud pops or clicks. Obviously no distortion what so ever.

The album starts straight away with great clear music, with so many sounds and layering that are usually inaudible on even slightly worn pressings. The run ins are near silent. 'Immigrant Song' bursts in and although it is a rockous track it can still be a real test for Zep III. Here it plays beautifully, with very little discernible static. The track bursts in with amazing power and clarity, a complex track with complex audio layering, all bright and clear. A wonderful 'Friends' starts with no light static, the whole track is incredibly clear. Super clear bright audio with perfect separation. Still no loud clicks or even a hint of light distortion or surface sound. I noticed a light pop and a few light static tics only. 'Celebration Day' again plays with amazing bright clear sound.

'Since I've Been Loving You' begins with bright clear music, and very little detectable light background static. There is some occasional static but any that there is barely noticeable, and can be only be heard very occasionally. This is such a hard track to find with clear sound, and the intro is nearly always dominated by loud plops clicks and static. Not here. There are one or two light pops and a few light static tics but they are light. Even those layered echoes on Plants vocal; 'Just one More' is crystal clear, with every layered track having superb separation. It would be hard to ever find a clearer, brighter pressing. A slight tic between these two tracks only. 'Out on The Tiles' plays superbly, with no loud pops or clicks, and no obvious faint background static. Great audio, the whole album just plays superbly with not a hint of distortion anywhere, just great super clear sound.

'Gallows Pole' starts off side 2. again with great clear audio. The whole track plays with No loud pops and minimal static. At the very start of the track the audio is really clear. There is some static and some static tics but nothing obvious. 'Tangerine' plays with clear sound but there is some light static and about seven intermittent pops. Such a test for Zep III, it plays here well, every note is sharp and bright.

The last of the quiet tracks on the album, 'Thats The Way' is again often blighted with heavy surface noise, but here it just plays really well. There is very little static, which is rare, and a few light pops. 'Bron - Aur Stomp' plays beautifully, with get clear sound. There are three light pops at the very start and the whole track plays with extremely bright power full audio. Rounding  off the album with the massive 'Hats Off To Roy Harper', this track just plays superbly. No loud pops, no clicks, no static. Just great clear loud audio.

I really enjoyed this ULTRA RARE 1st pressing of Zeppelin's classic album. There is NO distortion, and of course NO sticks or jumps what so ever. This pressing plays with crisp clear audio throughout, with no obvious loss of audio performance.

The music jumps out, with definition and clarity, the vocals which come through with tremendous power. Its the same with the bass guitar and drums, whilst the guitars come through crisp and clear. The tonal quality make this a sensational pressing. With the clear and extra loud First cut engineering giving the audio a vibrant sound which cannot be beaten.

This is a great Audio pleasure with bright clear sound. The audio on the whole grades between EXCELLENT to EXCELLENT PLUS but also down to VERY GOOD to VERY GOOD PLUS during 'Tangerine' and Thats The Way'. During these two tracks the audio is still bright but there are some light pops.

Staggering first stereo mix, unlike the re-issues which lack the impact. A great all round example of this great vinyl.

THE RECORD – VISUAL GRADING

A superb piece of glossy vinyl, and a really thick pressing. Deep clear grooves that can only be found on the original pressings, this vinyl has not been over played. The record has great shine, with NO scratches, in daylight it looks largely unmarked. When inspected under a spot light, I can see faint sleeve removal lines, a couple of light hairlines and light marks.

This is a great example of this ultra rare 1st pressing, and must grade at VERY GOOD PLUS to EXCELLENT.

VINYL TESTED FOR ANY SIGNS OF WARPING:

Yes, NONE visible what so ever when tested be sight and on a moving turntable.

THE LABELS

A lovely set of labels with barely any detectable spindle traces at all.  The 1960's red & maroon colours of the Atlantic label are only original pressings, they were re-designed to orange and green colours in late 1971.

All first issues of "Led Zeppelin 3" have two cryptic messages inscribed in the run-out grooves. (The shiny non-music part between the last track and the label!) Side1 has "Do What Thou Wilt" and Side 2 has "So Mote It Be", the Crowley text relates to Jimmy Page and his interest in magic and mysticism. Page is reportedly one of the biggest collectors of Crowley artefacts. The motto comes exclusively on the first pressing's, adding an air of the mystical to the album.

Great examples,  the colours are deep and unworn. A lovely set of these Ultra Rare First press labels. No obvious marks or scratches. No spindle wear and just one or two light spindle traces.

The 1960's red & maroon colours of the Atlantic label are only original pressings, they were re-designed to orange and green colours in late 1971. All the colour is deep and un eroded, and there are no tears, writing or sticker marks on these all important and so rare Plum labels. The colours are so deep on this pressing, and flat matt, truly fantastic examples.

This is a great set of this ultra rare 1st pressing, graded at NEAR MINT .

THE COVER

This is a great example of the classic Zep 3 album cover. A laminate press cover, with prefect working wheel, sitting snugly on its spindle.

The opening edge is very square and un frayed.  The inside Gatefold is clean and largely marked. The Spine shows minimal wear only, the spine text is totally intact, and is one of the squarest examples I have seen. A great solid example. As is so often the case with this record there is a laminate crease across rear gatefold, as clearly shown in the images, and some light yellowing round the edges that these covers are nearly always prone to. A few very light indentations only.

All round, this is a great example with no obvious faults. Strictly graded at  EXCELLENT.

THE INNER

Comes with Original 1st Press UK "British Patent", MADE IN ENGLAND Ploy Lined Inner sleeve, in VERY GOOD PLUS to EXCELLENT CONDITION. No rips, no tears, no stains, nice firmly attached solid and complete flip backs. A great example.

RARITY

It is getting harder and harder to find good examples of early PLUM pressings of Zep III, and very hard if not almost impossible to find ones in this condition. More than that, this is an extremely rare 1st UK  press label, with the correct ultra rare 1st Press cover all in great condition.

A plum LZ III in this type of condition is a truly unique piece. The vinyl is so often played so much, heavily marked, scratched, with noisy, poor and distorted sound. Any Plum examples with a record in this type of condition, that plays with great clear audio is very rare. What is certain, any plum pressing will blow away the orange and green pressings that followed from 1971. The cover is almost impossible to find without serious wear, even modestly worn examples are scarce. fantastic!

SCRUPULOUS EXAMINATION and TESTING:

All our records are play tested on highly sensitive equipment to ensure the sound quality and accuracy of description. We aim to give a precise and concise description of the sound, pointing out the slightest defect so that you know exactly what you are buying. We aim to describe all records as accurately as possible, and offer a full refund on return if for any reason you are not completely happy with the item description.

VINYL SOUND - PLEASE NOTE:

Highest quality vinyl with clear sound is rare, and what we always aim for. We only sell records that play with TOP AUDIO performance; super clear sound uninterrupted by hiss or other interference. Even with the cleanest pressing you will find occasional static or occasional light tics during playback, caused by a build of dust in the grooves. This is clearly different from the distortion, loud pops, repeating tics or clicks that are found on heavily played and worn pieces of vinyl. Any static build up will reduce when played, and we advise a light clean between plays for optimal performance.

.

IMAGES and INFORMATION

We only use photographs of the item for sale taken with professional digital cameras. The images are designed to be as clear as possible, giving an exact representation of the item. We aim to give sufficient and accurate detail as possible, so that you know exactly what you are buying. Please let us know if you need any further information and we will be happy to oblige.
