Description
An original Q1 1972 transitional pressing just after Atlantic had shifted to the new label design. If you are someone very fussy on the covers and the vinyl a Zep1 is going to set you back big $$$. However, if you want to get the perfect audio and are prepared to compromise with a copy from just a couple of years later this one may fit the bill. It's so close to being a 'red & plum' copy that on side 2 the audio is actually identical to a late red & plum press. On side 1 we have the new Kinney matrix & catalogue info and side 2 a dual matrix of new Kinney catalogue and original plum catalogue '588171'. Matrix A1/B4 - [just like the final plum copies]. Please note the labels do not exhibit any perimeter text in the upper-hemisphere, or the Warners logo. So, this copy dates from just after the Kinney takeover Q1 1972. As already mentioned - if you want to get as close as possible to the early copies, and bag something closing in on nearmint without spending a fortune, this is certainly worthy of consideration...
Vinyl (Ex+) In absolutely terrific condition and has only seen the lightest of use. Under close inspection we struggled to make out a single mark. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals an EXCELLENT+ level of playback. Intros and inbetweens are silent and the audio comes across with perfect clarity. Zep 1 is a difficult LP to find playing clean all the way through. There are lots of complex passages and lots of low-key passages. What you need is total silence in the back ground...ideally. And this copy delivers just that and some impressive audio to boot. Interference is borderline non-existent. All I could detect were a couple of crackles in a couple of isolated moments. Certainly one of the best renditions I've witnessed...a stunner.
Cover (Ex+) Wow, how often do you see an early 70's cover looking this crisp...especially Zep? This cover is borderline factory-fresh. It has, I would presume, just been tucked away carefully out of light for 47 years. Not the merest hint of ageing and without marking or creasing - just one super-light indentation. Ditto the rear - absolutely perfect. Edge wear? Forget about it..nothing at all..the openings are still perfectly sharp as are the corner points. The spine is 100% pristine with perfect pinched ends. Rigidity?..perfect...literally like it has come straight from the printers. FINAL UPGRADE.
Inner (Ex) Correct 1972 patent no. inner sleeve. Lightest ageing. Catalogue number written neatly in one top corner. No splits or markings.
