HARD TO FIND, HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER ORIGINAL US 1969 ATLANTIC RECORDS SD-8236 STEREO ORIGINAL RED (ORANGE) AND GREEN ATLANTIC RECORDS LABEL WITHOUT WEA LOGO ALONG THE LABEL’S EDGE AND WITH "1841 BROADWAY, NEW YORK, N.Y." ADDRESS. THIS IS THE LEGENDARY "HOT MIX" PRESS OF THE ORIGINAL BOB LUDWIG MASTERING; These were withdrawn early because the high bass levels caused low-grade cartridges to mistrack, leading people to return the album on the belief that it was defective. Another engineer was then hired to recut a much less "hot" version of the album, and that is the far more common version. HIS INITIALS (R)OBERT (L)UDWIG ARE STAMPED IN THE DEAD WAX TRAIL-OFF VINYL ON BOTH SIDES OF THE RECORD. ALL THE WONDERFUL ELEMENTS OF BOB LUDWIG’S TRADEMARK MASTERING STYLE ARE HERE: INCREDIBLE CLARITY AND BALANCED CHANNEL SEPARATION, VIVID AND SPACIOUS ”AMBIENCE” SOUND, AS WELL AS WIDE DYNAMIC AND FREQUENCY RANGE OF THE SOUND SPECTRUM. AS IS ALMOST ALWAYS THE CASE WITH BOB LUDWIG’S MASTERINGS, THE ROBERT LUDWIG-MASTERED PRESSINGS OF THIS ALBUM ARE CONSIDERABLY RARER THAN THE REGULAR, NON-LUDWIG COPIES OF THE ALBUM. ORIGINAL "TEXTURED" (CRUDE FINISH) THICK CARDBOARD (AMERICAN STYLE) GATEFOLD COVER. THIS IS THE WAY THE ALBUM WAS MEANT TO BE HEARD AS THE BAND FIRST INTENDED! IF YOU COUNT YOURSELF AMONGST THE MILLIONS OF LED ZEP FANS, THEN YOU OWE IT TO YOURSELF TO LEND AN EAR AS IT WILL DELIGHT AND NOT DISAPPOINT!
Condition: The wax shows a multitude of light surface markings on both sides, but nothing feelable. There is one larger more pronounced marking on side 2. I have tested the record multiple times on a high end Thorens turntable and it plays without any anomalies save for some surface noise especially at the beginning of side 2. Like John Peel said, Listen, mate, life has surface noise. Since the record plays through without anything terribly anomalous like skipping happening I've graded it VG. The sleeve shows some edge and corner wear. A little chipping is present. Top right hand rear has about a one inch split. Otherwise it has aged relatively well. The gatefold is still well and sturdy. Please note that the original paper inner sleeve for Atlantic Records is long gone and has been replaced with an old Reprise paper sleeve that has a split.
