Description

The first pressing of the 1969 Atlantic Records release of Led Zeppelin II was mastered by a young Bob Ludwig and beats every other pressing and reissue by a wide margin. This record is easily identified by scanning the matrix, a product code located in the run-out area next to the label. There, etched in the dead wax are the letters "RL/SS," shorthand for Robert Ludwig/Sterling Sound. Known among dealers as the "hot mix," it has such energy and dynamic range that when it was released it caused the needles on cheap record players to literally jump out of the grooves. This happened when Ahmet Ertegun, the president of Atlantic Records, brought a copy home to his daughter. Judging the record defective, he immediately ordered a new pressing with the signal dialed down and compressed. Ludwig would later lament that this version "sounded puny and aghh!"

This copy has the RL SS (Robert Ludwig/Sterling Sound) etched on both sides in the runout. It play tests in Excellent quality, with some light surface noise in the quietest parts. I have included an audio sample of Side A at needle drop, some loud and lower volume passages, and the very end of "Thank You"

You can hear the entire LP (MP3) at dropbox.

The vinyl has some very light scratches, but plays Excellent at high volume. There are no loud pops, skips or loud surface noise in the quieter passages. The jacket is rated Good+. The top seam of the jacket is split and there is some damage to the interior of the gatefold. This is shown in the listing photos. There is a name written on the label on Side A.

I will very carefully pack this special LP so that it arrives as shown. Thanks for looking and please visit my store! Keeth.
