Very rare copy of Led Zeppelin's second album, 1st US pressing featuring Robert Ludwig's "Hot Mix" mastering of both sides. Withdrawn very early as the high bass levels caused low-grade cartridges to mistrack, which made people to return the album thinking it was defective. First print thick raw matte light brown gatefold cover with the incredibly rare blue "Stereo" banner on the spine and not the common green one. Original 1st print Atlantic Records "From The Atlantic Catalogue" inner sleeve with the other 54 Atlantic releases, which was changed to another inner sleeve with 16 adverts on all of the subsequent pressings. Very early 1st print orange-green labels with the "PR" suffix, indicating Presswell, NJ pressing, "Mfg By Atlantic Recording Corp., 1841 Broadway, New York, N.Y." address, and SD 8236 catalog number. Original 1st pressing vinyl with the hot mix Bob Ludwig's mastering handwritten initials "RL" (Robert Ludwig) are stamped in the trail-off vinyl on both sides. Sterling Sound's "SS" mastering handwritten initials are also located in the trail-off vinyl on both sides. Full matrix numbers are as follows: Side 1 - ST-A-691671-A LW W AT RL SS; Side 2 - ST-A-691672-A P LW AT RL SS W.

I grade the cover as Excellent Minus as the front and back don't have any ring wear, writing or scuffs. The interior gatefold is Near Mint. The cover has some light wear and scuffing on the spine. The edges don't have any splits and have a minimum amount of scuffing. The vinyl is graded as Very Good containing light surface hairlines, marks and scuffs from the original Atlantic Records inner sleeve, which is in Near Mint Minus condition. The labels are in clean Near Mint condition and don't have any scuffs or wear. The vinyl plays very well throughout without any skips. It has some light background noise and occasional light static crackling, which perhaps would get reduced if the record is professionally cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine.
