Holy grail extremely rare Atlantic Records pre-release promotional copy of Led Zeppelin’s 3rd album. This extremely rare Mono mix was produced for the declining AM radio stations which couldn’t broadcast stereo signals and was pressed in a very limited number. While most Atlantic Mono promos were manufactured using the CSG process (Compatible Stereo Generator), which was commonly referred to as a “fold-down” mix, this issue doesn’t indicate that this process was used, meaning that Jimmy Page probably provided the company with a non-specified mix for the pressing. Original 1st print die-cut “gimmick” gatefold cover with a rotating wheel inside the front cover which contains the original black “Led Zeppelin III” song title hype sticker and a red “Promotional D/J Copy Monaural Not For Sale” sticker at the top. Original Atlantic Records pre-release promotional “Sample Copy Not For Sale” white label with the “7201” catalog number not having the “SD” prefix, and a double pressing ring, 1.25” and 2.75”. The bottom half of the label contains the “PR” suffix indicating that the vinyl was pressed by the Presswell Records Mfg. company at their plant in Ancora, New Jersey as well as the “1841 Broadway, New York, N.Y.” address along the rim. The full very early 1st matrix numbers of this promotional pressing are as follows: Side 1 - A - 13469 - C AT W DK; Side 2 - A - 13469 - C AT W DK. The album comes with the original Atlantic Records inner sleeve containing the adverts for other Atlantic’s releases.

The promotional cover is in amazing Near Mint Minus condition. It’s super clean and the front doesn’t have any wear, scuffs, soiling, writing, residue or ring wear. The back side only has some very light age shelf wear and a hint of ring wear at the bottom. Some very light and barely noticeable age discoloration along the edges. The black rigid spine and edges are in impeccable condition. The Near Mint gatefold interior is super clean. We grade the vinyl as somewhere between Strong Very Good Plus and Excellent Minus. It retains its magnificent shiny factory gloss only having a few very light non-feelable surface hairlines as well as scuffs from the original “From The Atlantic Catalog” inner sleeve which is in Near Mint condition and doesn’t have any splits or tears. The snow-white labels don’t have any scuffs, wear or spindle marks and in Near Mint condition, practically Mint Minus. The vinyl plays amazing, which is especially impressive considering that this is a DJ Radio Station promotional copy, having a warm and soft Mono sound with perhaps just some very light occasional static which most likely will go away if the record is professionally cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine.
