This 1985 double-LP captures the original London production of Les Misérables, presented by Cameron Mackintosh and the Royal Shakespeare Company. The production opened at London's Barbican Theatre in September 1985 before transferring to the Palace Theatre later that year.

The recording features the cast associated with the musical's landmark original London production, led by Colm Wilkinson as Jean Valjean and Patti LuPone as Fantine, alongside Roger Allam, Michael Ball, Frances Ruffelle, Alun Armstrong, Rebecca Caine and other members of the original company.

The album was recorded and mixed at CTS Studios, Wembley in 1985 and was Direct Metal Mastered at Sonopress in West Germany. This UK First Night Records edition carries catalog number Encore 1.
