This outstanding LP – a still-sealed copy – from CBS Masterworks (M 39007, US pressing*, blue / red sash label, DDD stereo, original inner sleeve included) features Cho-Liang Lin’s quicksilver and radiant accounts of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor Op. 64 and Saint-Saens's Violin Concerto No. 3 in B minor Op. 61, both recorded with conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and the Philharmonia Orchestra in the warm acoustics of Studio No. 1, Abbey Road, London, on 26 October 1982 (producer: Steven Epstein / engineer: Peter Brown).
This is exalted playing by any measure and all those who treasure the art of the violin will find much to admire here. Tilson Thomas’ accompaniment is absolutely first rate.
The engaging cover photo of Lin was taken by David Kennedy. There are superlative liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Philip Ramey, provided in English, German, and French.
* I believe this to be a US pressing; it is possible that it was pressed in The Netherlands. I will not accept a return based on a buyer’s preference for the opposite of whatever the case may be. This is a pristine, sealed copy – both US and Dutch pressins from this period are equally fine.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the still-sealed jacket is near-MINT. Really, there are no flaws to speak of and the jacket appears as new – overall, a truly fine collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is MINT – this is a still-sealed, pristine LP – the ideal collector’s copy.
PLEASE NOTE:
This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
