Featuring Female Vocals by Irene Crutchfield Irene Crutchfield Brown (vocalist) was born in 1939 and graduated from Langston High School. She attended AM&N College in Pine Bluff (now UAPB) from 1957 to 1959, graduating with a two-year degree in Elementary Education.
While at AM&N College in Pine Bluff, she was a choir member making connections to some of those who would shape her career as a vocalist. She credits John Puckett and Art Porter, Sr. as her mentors. She worked first with pianist John Puckett at the Aristocrat Hotel in Hot Springs and then with pianist Art Porter, Sr., for over 20 years. She and Porter performed at various nightclubs in Little Rock, including The Brown Bottle, The AfterThought, Cajun’s Wharf, Little Rock County Club, Art’s Place, and The Diplomat.
Irene Crutchfield has one album credit, “Little Rock a.m.” - an LP with pianist Henry Shead and Art Porter, Sr., produced by Jim Porter, Jr. She claims Nancy Wilson and Tony Bennett as jazz influences. Appearing under the stage name “Irene Crutchfield,” she performed with many other Arkansas jazz musicians, including TeRoy Betton, Jr., Brian Brown, Reggie Cravens, Joe Cripps, Randy Goodrum, Leonard Johnson, Carwin Pleasant, Art Porter, Jr., Kenneth Porter, Reggie Porter, Dave Rogers, Larry Ross, and Ken Walker.
