Description

DRUMGITA SOLO Lori Vambe Drumony Records-1 1982
I have no idea how many of these were pressed (I'm guessing very few) - in my 25 years of collecting, I've never come across another copy of this. I can find no information whatsoever about the record or the label and only the scarcest mention of Lori Vambe online. Everything about this record has a homemade feel about it.
Totally weird, psychedelic outings on a homemade instrument. The music contained is unlike anything I've ever encountered. Raw, rhythmic drone on an instrument that is half drum/half electric guitar. Focused, but heavy, trance inducing syncopated strumming on open strings bringing out rich harmonics that resonate the drum head. Occasional rattling, buzzing sounds and rhythms arise throughout the pieces as they build (I'm assuming these are the sounds of his DRUMGITA STRINGDRUM). While many of the melodies are played on a single note or an open fifth, each track manages to be unique and compelling. Side two features a couple of short tracks of Drumgita tape manipulation (slowed down as well as played backward). A hybrid of spiritual freejazz, minimalism, experimental psych, new age, and folk sensibilities makes this one impossible to pin down - very intimate and mysterious. In a way it reminds me of early Takoma recordings, but much more agressive and minimal.
from the liner notes:
"VAMBEZ STRINGDRUM (Patent Pending) These recordings were performed Solo by Lori Vambe on Vambez Stringdrum a new musical instrument of his own invention which combines the drum and guitar in one self contained body whilst enabling the performer to play both instruments seperately or simultaneously."
"This album is dedicated to independent Zimbabwe and all those fighting for the future unity of life on Planet Earth."
