Lovely Midget- Voiceless + Planet Caravan/Waxy Digit LATHE CUT 7" (Pink Air 009)
With three proper releases on Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore's label Ecstatic Peace, The Dead C's Bruce Russell's Corpus Hermeticum and Family Vineyard, Lovely Midget also released two lathe cut 7"s in New Zealand. The first was repressed for a 10" on Moore's label and the second, complete with hand drawn covers and lovely packaging was never replicated. The latter is this record.Released on Stella Corkery's Pink Air imprint (Shearer's former bandmate in Angelhead (their band with Michael Morley) and Queen Meanie Puss), this was an edition of maybe 20 to 40 copies. I've not seen one appear since.

This New Zealand solo artist adopted the moniker Lovely Midget in the early '90s after membership in the obscure noise group Queen Meenie Puss. Released on Corpus Hermeticum, Lovely Midget's debut CD comes packaged in a discreetly designed cardboard case that is unique to the label. The brown recycled card and antiquated images that adorn it are indicative of the worn and decayed sounds within. Lovely Midget uses analog synthesizer, distorted guitars, vocals, and percussion to construct a somber world with bleak monotone soundscapes. The few diversions from textured drones provide elating moments of computer processing and editing, where the listener seems to be dropped into a new realm of sound and left wondering how that state was entered -- as if falling out of sleep. When listeners are left to ponder the grainy ambience, it evokes imagery akin to black-and-white silent films. The cinematic quality of this artist's recordings have been recognized and, incidentally, used as soundtracks to some New Zealand underground art films. The use of electric guitar noise brings to mind early Sonic Youth, in the way that the instrument is used to create wild storms of electric noise rather than conventional rhythm or melody. The seven tracks on this CD seem like the product of many long winter nights, and the closer, "Silent Folk Song," has a feigning melody that renders it a distorted image of a song -- the closest this singular album comes to conventional formulas.

Rachel Shearer has released a series of projects and performed live under the moniker Lovely Midget since 1997 with a 10” vinyl release on US label ‘Ecstatic Peace’, a CD on NZ label Corpus Hermeticum in 2000,a 2003 CD release with US label Family Vineyard.
Earlier experience in the late 80’s/early 90’s saw releases on NZ cassette label ‘Xpressway’ as part of the group Angelhead, Flying Nun and Siltbreeze releases with all girl avant-goth-rock group Queen Meanie Puss.
Rachel combines her musical experiments with a variety of sound practices - creating sound installations, composing music for film and working as a sound designer/sound editor.
7" is MINT- (lathe discs always have some surface noise due to the way they're made, this sounds very clean)/Cover is MINT/Insert is MINT.
